The publication of the 30th issue of whiteMAD is a source of pride for us. An anniversary. We are delighted that, in every issue of the magazine, we have been able to showcase the achievements of young Polish architects, designers and creative artists. Now, too, we are delighted to present the results of their work, which are a feast for the eyes! We feel JOY. That is why we are publishing the 30th issue of the magazine under the theme of joy.
I think everyone can point to a moment when fashion brings joy. Well-chosen fabrics demonstrate creativity and allow you to express yourself. A prime example of this is the ‘Echoes’ collection by the young designer Maja Pilarek, a graduate of the Institute of Fashion at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Her love for Silesia inspired her to create outfits set against the backdrop of Katowice. Meanwhile, we can see a fascination with high fashion in Dominik Więcek’s photographs. The looks he has created are like a fairy tale about femininity.

What is joy in architecture? We see it, for example, in the flat that Kristina Busko designed for herself in Spain. Its interior functions like a stage set – there’s a lot going on there, yet at the same time it’s blissful and pleasant. Similarly in Gdynia, where the architects from the bo/sko studio have created a space that organises the life of a family of four whilst allowing it to evolve freely. It’s a story about an interior where colours set the tone but never dominate the inhabitants. There are more interior design projects in the Architecture section!
In the Design section, we look at how joy manifests itself in objects, processes and the attitudes of creators. The focus of this issue is on the MUAS duo – Kati Romanowska and Łukasz Przygodziński – with whom we discuss working with materials and how emotions translate into ceramics. This time, the curated selection of top pieces by Polish designers was made by Alicja Korbut-Kaźnica, founder of Salak Studio. Alicja has chosen objects that radiate energy and convey a sense of freedom.
We invited creators working in various fields of contemporary design to discuss their own definitions of joy. Their perspectives show that joy can stem from the process, the material, the relationship with the viewer, or the very act of creation itself. Taken as a whole, this provides a cross-section of how design is conceived today.
