Just 20 square metres. Micro-apartment in Gdansk!

At just 20 m², the micro-apartment in Gdansk was designed to fulfil all the functions needed by guests renting it for a short stay. This compact space includes a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable bathroom, air conditioning and a living area that combines relaxation, sleeping and dining. Despite its minimal size, the accommodation is completely suitable for a comfortable stay.

The design was created with tourists in mind – functionality and a hotel-like feel were the priorities here. The owner and designer agreed that the flat should be modern, slightly extravagant, but at the same time not overwhelming. The furnishings were kept to the necessary minimum to emphasise clarity and comfort.

Layout inspired by hotel comfort

The classic sofa was dispensed with in the living area, and the kitchen was hidden in the hallway so as not to visually dominate the rest of the space. The entire space has been furnished with short-term rental in mind, so durable, easy-to-clean materials have been used.

The interior features vinyl wallpaper, tiled flooring and smooth, decoration-free furniture fronts. The lightness of the space is emphasised by simple forms and clever solutions, such as a suspended wardrobe or compact furniture, which do not weigh down the interior visually.

Three main zones in a 20 square metre interior

The project was divided into three functional areas: the entrance area, the living area and the bath area. The wide hallway made it possible to plan a capacious built-in unit hiding the key kitchen appliances: fridge, washing machine, microwave and dishwasher. Although the furniture is massive, its colours match the walls, making it almost disappear in the space. The only distinctive accent is the central fronts in a subtle champagne gloss. The hallway is finished with a fabric-textured vinyl wallpaper, which warms up the interior and ensures that the surface is easy to keep clean.

Elegant living area on a micro scale

Behind the kitchen cabinets, the space opens up into an elegant living area – calm, but with strong colour accents. The ceiling is the most eye-catching, set in a maroon frame and highlighted with a stucco strip, which gives the interior a unique character. Other elements are kept in muted, beige tones: from the floor to the wallpaper, to the curtains and the built-in furniture. This makes the flat elegant without being overwhelming.

The hanging wardrobe with mirrored fronts gently blends in and optically enlarges the space. Behind the custom-made bed headboard, there is a low pre-wall that functions as a shelf. This is also the place for subtle lighting – an LED strip and the necessary accessories.

Bathroom divided into two atmospheric zones

The bath area is clearly separated by colours and materials. The wash area is expressive with patterned tiles and maroon walls and ceiling. In contrast, the shower area, located in a niche separated by a glass partition, is bright and subdued, promoting relaxation. It is a clever combination of contrast and harmony that makes even a small bathroom seem functional and balanced.

A place for tourists

Micro-apartment in Gdansk! is an example of how a very limited space can be used to create a comfortable, fully thought-out hotel-like interior. This small space offers tourists comfort, functionality and a modern design that allows them to relax after a busy day of sightseeing.
