A new edition of the Łódź Design Festival will begin on 21 May. For a few days, Łódź will become the Polish capital of design. This is the 18th edition of the event, during which you will be able to see the best projects of not only Polish designers. A programme of over 60 exhibitions and events awaits those hungry for excitement, all under the common theme of KOMFORT. But that is not the end of the good news – participation in the event is free! The exhibitions will be open until Sunday, 26 May.
The organisers of ŁDF2024 invite you to immerse yourself in the various aspects of the concept of COMFORT, showing how contemporary design responds dynamically to the changing needs of society.
We are now living in a constant search for satisfaction and well-being, and accelerating changes are presenting us with new challenges. During the upcoming edition of the festival, we will discover how comfort penetrates far beyond traditional physical comforts to encompass subtle elements such as harmony, peace of mind and the individual needs of users. We will show that a properly designed environment is not only conducive to well-being, but also reflects our unique identity and desired lifestyle ,’ emphasises Michał Piernikowski, director of the Łódź Design Festival.

This year’s Lodz Design Festival will probably appeal to anyone who likes to spend time fruitfully and develop various passions. You just have to hurry up – admission to the festival on 21-26 May is free, but registration for selected events is compulsory, and the registration started on 22 April!
Festival workshops are an extremely popular part of the ŁDF programme, prepared for various audiences – both professionals and amateurs; the organisers have also prepared an offer for children. The choice can be made from nearly 20 proposals, and their wide range of topics ranges from learning craft techniques (e.g. Cloying on glaze) to the topic of using AI resources in prototyping (e.g. Innovation with AI – how to increase the chances of success by joining forces?). Last remaining places available for the walks on the trail of Anna and Karol Scheibler and the trail of lodz trees.
A special mention should be given to the extremely extensive Sustainable inclusive spaceorganised together with the Polish Green Building Council PLGBC. It consists of as many as four thematic sides: Health & Wellbeing: wellbeing – how to measure it; Transformation: towards sustainable cities; Biodiversity: how to win the city? and Design: universal design, or a better world for all. Here, too, you need to hurry to sign up – places are limited and the event will not be streamed online.
Schedule of events
The events planned by the organisers are a good opportunity to meet friends, but also to meet completely new people who appreciate creative activities. These few festival days will be spent discussing new trends in design (Block: Innovation, Accessibility vs. Aesthetics – can they be reconciled?), comfort zone design (Block: Comfort), design of yesteryear that is making a comeback (Vintage comfort, rediscovering or graphic design in the PRL), environmental design (Environmental Grapgic Design as a tool for designing quality interiors and architecture) or technological issues (Time for Comfort: Modern Technological Solutions – How Technology Improves Comfort in Architecture). Also worth attending are film screenings: the Polish premiere of the award-winning “Monoblock” (dir. Hauke Wendler) and the world premiere of the “Renewal of Architecture” (dir. Ewa Trzcionka).
At ŁDF2024, there will, of course, be the audience-loving Sunday ARCHIBLOKwhich this year is devoted to the design of publicly accessible spaces and what the needs of city dwellers should be so that we all feel comfortable in them.
[…] we will be making an assault on the sacred. For we are taking on a concept that is central to our European, Western identity and to the design thinking that follows from it. This concept is comfort. It has the unusual characteristic that it becomes invisible to us quite quickly,” announcesFilip Springer, the presenter of this part of the festival programme. The series of expert presentations ending with a debate will feature Natalia Olszewska, Agata Szydłowska, Paweł Grobelny, Kasper Jakubowski and Jan Mencwel.

Visiting ŁDF is also a good way to get to know Łódź better – the festival centre itself is located in the post-industrial space of the former Karol Scheibler’s complex (Art_Inkubator, Tymienieckiego 3), and the accompanying exhibitions in no less atmospheric places. The historic Boiler Room of the Karol Scheibler Power Plant in the area of the Fusion (Zięta Illustrated), the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź (The phenomenon of Polish kilim), the Academic Design Centre in the famous Księży Młyn (Łódź Carpet. Art – craft – industry, Coincidence? I don’t think so., Space of water, Steam Slits – Steam Processor) or to the intimate RE:medium gallery, located in the heart of Piotrkowska Street (Łódź from the kitchen. Słownik łodzianów).
Now is the perfect time to properly plan all the activities at ŁDF2024, because as you can see, there is plenty to choose from! As if that wasn’t enough, the organisers have announced that, this year too, admission to exhibitions and events at the Festival Centre (Art_inkubator in the Art Factory) is free. To make sure you don’t miss anything, just come along (there will be no online broadcasts this year).
