Konin is implementing a programme to renovate its historic tenement houses. One of the latest buildings to be restored to its former glory and functionality is the one at 17 Wojska Polskiego Street. The investment was very extensive. The work focused, among other things, on thermal modernisation and renovation of the century-old walls under the supervision of a conservator. The metamorphosis of the tenement house was made possible thanks to funding from national and European sources.
Tenement house at 17 Wojska Polskiego Street in Konin
The building at 17 Wojska Polskiego Street was built in 1925, which means it belongs to a group of tenement houses in Konin from the interwar period. It has an almost symmetrical, two-storey structure topped with a mansard roof covered with ceramic tiles. Under half of the property, there was a low basement, which was filled in due to its non-functionality. The front façade is based on an axial layout with a central bay window, under which the main entrance is located. Above it, there is a preserved inscription with the date of construction. The whole is complemented by rounded balconies and windows with simple lintels and window sills. The rear façade is flat, with only windows and doors. The side walls are also devoid of decorations. The tenement house has been maintained in subdued colours with light green plaster and white details. This is the result of a recent renovation; previously, the building was a mere shadow of its former charm.

Scope of renovation at Wojska Polskiego 17 in Konin
The comprehensive renovation of the historic tenement house, which was completed last autumn, covered the entire building. All facades, the roof, window and door frames, as well as the interiors were renovated. The ceilings and plaster were replaced, tile stoves were removed in favour of central heating, and new installations were laid. The city budget financed the complete modernisation of the flats and the staircase, where the historic balustrade on the ground floor was renovated and new oak stairs were built above. The building currently houses 10 council flats. The renovation of details and the tidying up of the woodwork and colour scheme of the building have significantly improved its appearance. Despite being 101 years old, it looks very fresh and elegant on Wojska Polskiego Street.
Thermal modernisation and financing of the investment
The project entitled “Thermal modernisation of the building at 17 Wojska Polskiego Street in Konin” was carried out between 30 July 2024 and 14 October 2025. The total value of the project was PLN 2,576,413.93, with co-financing in the amount of PLN 1,673,902.56, including an MZG grant of PLN 528,789.79. The city’s own contribution was PLN 902,511.37. The project was implemented as part of the National Reconstruction Plan under the TERMO Programme, with the participation of state budget funds and European funds.

The significance of the investment for residents
The projects carried out as part of the renovation of tenement houses are aimed at the residents of Konin. Such investments bring measurable effects in the form of lower heat energy consumption, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved comfort of use of the flats. The modernisation of heating systems and improved insulation also affect the air quality in the city and help to adapt historic buildings to changing climatic conditions. Neglected tenement buildings are once again fully usable and adorn the oldest part of the city.
Wojska Polskiego 17 is not the end
The impressive renovation at 17 Wojska Polskiego Street is not the end. The city has also recently completed work on three other buildings. The tenement house at 3 Maja 34 was covered by a thermal modernisation project worth PLN 1,208,942.58, with co-financing of PLN 863,133.12. The scope of work included the facades, roof, woodwork and installations. At 15 Wiosny Ludów Street, an investment worth PLN 2,199,149.49 focused on external works with the renovation of flats and the staircase, additionally financed from the city budget. The tenement house at 20 Adama Mickiewicza Street was also renovated, with work carried out on the façades and roof. The scale of the changes to the appearance of these buildings is truly impressive, which also translates into the overall image of Konin’s Old Town, the so-called Starówka. According to the authorities, further renovations are planned.
