Krzysztof Miruć suggests how ceramics can transform interiors [Interview]

Nothing gives such a sense of comfort and security as a well-designed house or flat. Surrounding ourselves with elements that bring us closer to nature makes the interiors feel warm and harmonious. We feel good in them. This is known to the designers at Senti Ceramica, who have created collections inspired by natural materials, including wood and stone. Architect Krzysztof Miruć, brand ambassador, shared with us his thoughts on interior design and gave us valuable tips on what to keep in mind when designing the perfect living space.

The most fashionable interior designs have been proving for years that the place for ceramic tiles is not only in the bathroom. You can successfully decorate your kitchen, living room or bedroom with them. Ceramics add character, elegance and improve the functionality of an interior. Thanks to the variety of patterns, colours and textures, tiles make it possible to create original spaces.

The answer to the needs of those looking for timeless design and high-quality products are the Senti Ceramica collections. Among the nearly 50 available designs, you will find those that imitate stone, wood, concrete and metal. These are durable and resistant porcelain stoneware tiles with a versatile range of applications, which are perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, as well as living rooms and bedrooms. The nature motif used in the designs gives warmth to the interior and allows for easy selection of furniture and accessories.

Kamil Białas: Who are the Senti Ceramica collections for?

Krzysztof Miruć: We want the recipients of Senti ceramics to be people looking for materials that allow them to realise their ideas for interiors that pay attention to detail. It is a wide range of timeless products with which any project can be realised.

What solutions do you recommend to people who ask you about current trends when designing a flat?

I am averse to trends. They appear quickly and disappear even more quickly. Of course, interior design was different a few years ago and today. The most important thing is timelessness, so that the space still looks and feels fresh despite the passage of time. Such are interiors that have been designed with an idea in mind, using well-composed materials. At Senti Ceramica, we offer products inspired by nature to design a timeless interior. Wood, stone, concrete or metal motifs offer the possibility of creating arrangements based on one of these categories or elaborate compositions combining several of them.

Krzysztof Miruć

I’ll pull on the theme of timelessness. If you had to design an interior now that would look good five or ten years from now, what elements would you bet on?

Every interior has potential, so I first analyse what it looks like and then look for an idea. It’s important to find out what we like, what effect we would like to achieve. Only in the next step do we choose the materials for the furnishings. It may then turn out that one wall finished with wood imitation tiles and laid vertically becomes the main element of the room. We don’t have to tile all the walls from floor to ceiling. It is enough to lay one, but with a cool idea, with nice lighting, keeping in mind the viewing axes, functionality and aesthetics.

I always say that interior design is like dressing ourselves, composing our styling. Sometimes we can wear something from a chain store, add something original, jewellery and it looks very cool. It’s the same with design – we have an idea for the styling of the interior, we choose the materials, then the furnishings, we add light, decorative objects and we create a coherent, nicely designed space that will be timeless. If we build a good base, we can easily change its appearance in the future by choosing other accessories. At Senti Ceramica, we want to show customers that our products are such a base, they can be used very widely, not only in bathrooms, but also in living rooms, hallways or bedrooms.

Based on your experience, can you identify colours that are worth putting together? Materials?

Earthy colours and those that contrast gently with each other look very good together. For example, a light background should be juxtaposed with something dark so that the two elements begin to interact. The same goes for surfaces. Rough things look good with smooth and shiny ones. Then we emphasise the differences between them.

Krzysztof Miruć

Back to the tiles. Over the last few years, I have observed that they are increasingly being used in non-standard ways. They have different arrangements, sometimes even forming mosaic-like compositions. Have we started to go outside the box? Are we decorating more boldly?

I am a good example of this. In many of our projects, we have laid porcelain stoneware tiles, for example, on TV walls, in bedrooms or even to create entire built-in areas. Porcelain stoneware is a finishing material and I am in favour of using it in any way you like. If you buy a rectangular tile of a given size, you can play with it. You can cut it into any format, combine it with decorative strips, create a graphic layout on the wall. I encourage us to get rid of the stereotype that ceramic tiles should only decorate the floor in the kitchen or bathroom. Today, tiles perfectly imitate stone, wood or concrete, and offer a multitude of possibilities.

WOOD

Among Senti Ceramica’s offer you will find several collections imitating wood. These include light shades, such as the Helsinki and Balton collections, as well as darker shades in the Irati and Dynamic collections, which are distinguished by their distinct grain. An interesting feature is Classica and Pinea, which can be laid on the wall or floor to create a French herringbone effect.

BETON

An example of a collection inspired by concrete is Suburb. The tiles of this collection have a smooth, matt surface and are available in several shades. More imaginative interiors will be given by the Stracciatella collection, which is an interpretation of terrazzo. It is a great alternative to the classic white or grey tiles.

STONE

Stone-inspired tile collections will achieve a luxurious interior effect. The collections include colours to suit a variety of styles. The Hekla collection stands out for its faithful reproduction of the look of stone. The Forza collection is for lovers of Cararian marble.

METAL

For fans of industrial interiors. Collections of tiles imitating metal will add character to the room. An example is Loft, whose dark colour directly alludes to metal sheets subjected to the passage of time. Two colour versions are available in this collection – Blue and Copper Rust – both in a matt finish.
