The magnificent lakeside house in northern Idaho is an example of the successful modernisation of a 1960s building. The building was originally designed in the style of Modernism, but over time lost its character as a result of numerous alterations. The architects at HDG Architecture decided to restore the building to its original identity, drawing inspiration from the architecture of Southern California in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly the work of A. Quincy Jones and the famous Eichler houses.
The lake house – the return of modernism
The main challenge of the project was the constraints of local regulations, which prevented an increase in the building footprint. The project team therefore focused on reorganising the existing space and improving its functionality. The new roof, with its distinctive A-frame shape, became a key element of the composition and allowed the creation of interiors of impressive height. The central area, including the entrance and kitchen, opens up to the south, offering panoramic views of Lake Coeur d’Alene.
Functionality subordinated to the landscape
The 322sq m house houses three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The layout of the rooms has been planned to maximise the view of the lake. Each of the interiors opens up onto the landscape through large glazings and carefully designed viewing axes. The 195-square-metre terrace has become the most important place for daily living. Covered eaves protect the occupants from the summer sun and, in winter, allow the sun’s rays to penetrate into the interior, supporting the heating system.

Modernity in the spirit of the mid-20th century
During the renovation, the building was almost completely demolished and built anew using the original foundations. This process allowed the architects to rethink every element of the massing, layout and relationship of the house to its surroundings. The interiors have been kept in a streamlined, modernist aesthetic. White walls, concrete, glass and visible ceiling beams were used. The space is durable and functional, designed for everyday use and not just for aesthetic effect.
A lakeside house full of harmony
The effect of the remodelling is a skilful combination of precision and moderation. The house has retained a freshness and clarity of form, so that it fits into the North Idaho landscape in a natural and unobtrusive way. The architects have once again proven that the modernist idea of simplicity, clarity and functionality can still remain relevant, and the renovated house on Lake Coeur d’Alene is a prime example of this.
