Lanterns over the Vistula. A luminous installation in Warsaw

The luminous decorations can be seen on the Vistula Boulevards in Warsaw. The lanterns have a geometric form and their walls are decorated with patterns through which the light penetrates. A total of 15 lanterns have appeared along the Vistula River.

The lanterns along the Vistula will be on display not only on festive occasions. It is an installation that will accompany residents all year round. Each of the lanterns has been decorated with motifs inspired by nature and the activities of the Vistula Quarter. The indentations on the walls bring to mind whirlpools, the sails of Warsaw’s Omegas, butterflies and dragonflies found on the Vistula in summer.

The Vistula Quarter is a place that can surprise you at any time of year and encourage you to spend time close to nature in the middle of the city. For years, we have been experimenting with light that magically corresponds to water. The Vistula’s Gallery of Lights, the chirping rainbow, the neon signs under the Świętokrzyski Bridge and in the Czerniakowski Port, and the magnificent graphics on the bridge supports by Ola Jasionowska have inspired this year’s surprise, which we have prepared for all visitors to the Vistula,” says Magdalena Młochowska, director of the Green Warsaw Coordinator.

The design of the installation was made by Multidekor. Some of the graphics on the lanterns were created by poster artist Ola Jasionowska, who is the author of many graphics promoting the capital and its events. In total, more than 110 sq m of sheet metal and 1,000 kg of aluminium were used to create the lanterns. The largest lantern is 3 m high, the next two are 2 m each. The entire installation is complemented by 12 smaller lanterns suspended above the ground.

The lanterns over the Vistula River also shine during the day. This is when they shimmer with a soft light, the colour of which changes constantly.

The lanterns can be admired all year round on the Vistula Flotilla Boulevard, near the Landing Plate and the entrance to Czerniakowski Port. A walk in this area can inspire you to spend time on the water during a cruise, because as long as the ice hasn’t cut down the Vistula we continue to sail. A winter cruise is quite a treat. Especially in a festively decorated boat, under a blanket and with a winter tea in hand. We invite you to admire festive Warsaw from the water. Cruises are held on all December Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., we set off and finish on the beach at the Landing Plate,” says Jan Piotrowski, Warsaw Mayor’s Plenipotentiary for the Vistula River.
