LEGO SMART Play™ – bricks that respond to play

At the beginning of 2026, LEGO will embark on a whole new stage in the development of its iconic bricks. The LEGO SMART Play™ platform is a product that will particularly appeal to fans of mini puzzles and the iconic Star Wars saga. Interactive models that respond to movement, sound and play open up completely new possibilities for fans to build stories. No screens, no apps and no need to change your existing sets.

LEGO SMART Brick technology

At the heart of the new platform is the LEGO SMART Brick, equipped with a proprietary microprocessor smaller than a standard LEGO stud. Inside, there are motion sensors, accelerometers, light and sound detectors, as well as a miniature speaker with a built-in synthesiser. The whole thing is charged wirelessly and designed so that the technology does not dominate the fun, but subtly complements it.

LEGO SMART Play™ – interaction based on imagination

LEGO SMART Play™ works on the basis of the cooperation of three elements: a smart brick, special markers and figures. Thanks to them, the constructions react to movement, positioning or contact with other elements, triggering sounds and sequences of events. The user of the toy does not play out a pre-programmed scenario, but builds their own stories in which the reactions of the bricks become an impulse for further play.

Debut at CES and scale of innovation

The new platform was presented at CES 2026 in Las Vegas by representatives of the LEGO Group. The project was developed within the company’s Creative Play Lab and includes more than 20 patent-protected solutions. This is one of the biggest changes to the LEGO system since the introduction of minifigures in the late 1970s.

LEGO Star Wars as the perfect testing ground

The launch of the platform in the Star Wars universe is a real treat for fans of the saga. Spaceships, iconic characters and recognisable sounds are just begging for an interactive form. The first sets allow you to re-enact familiar scenes, while encouraging you to create your own variations on events from a galaxy far, far away.

Luke Skywalker and the X-Wing fighter

The set featuring Luke Skywalker’s red X-Wing consists of 584 pieces and includes two smart figures and a set of markers. The construction reacts with engine sounds, laser shot effects, and repair and refuelling sounds, among other things. The presence of R2-D2, Leia and additional rebel and stormtrooper figures allows you to create elaborate battle scenarios.

The Empire strikes back with the TIE Fighter

Darth Vader comes with the iconic TIE fighter. The set includes elements of Imperial infrastructure, such as a refuelling point and a rebel outpost. Thanks to the smart brick, the model reacts to movement and activity, reproducing the characteristic roar of engines and other sound effects that enhance the dynamics of play.

LEGO SMART Play™ and a duel in the throne room

The largest of the sets presented refers to the final scene of Return of the Jedi. The box contains over 960 pieces, three smart minifigures of the main characters, and additional characters and vehicles. Interactive features include lightsaber sounds, A-wing sounds, and musical themes triggered by the appropriate positioning of the minifigures.

The long-awaited premiere

LEGO SMART Play™ sets will go on sale on 1 March 2026, with pre-orders already available since early January. For LEGO and Star Wars fans, this is one of the most eagerly awaited launches in recent years. Everything indicates that the new platform will permanently change the way we play with bricks, offering an experience that is intuitive, surprising and very impressive. LEGO is clearly signalling that this is only the beginning of the further development of this technology.
