This project is an attempt to create a living space that is designed to provide a van-like experience. The micro version of the mobile holiday home was built using wood, without the use of harmful preservatives. Nevertheless, the designers ensure that it is mould-resistant.
The structure was designed by architects from the German Attia Design office in collaboration with engineers from Weidlich moon-wood manufactory. The building was created for people who like to travel and can work using a mobile living space. At the same time, they value minimalism and sustainability.
The mobile holiday home was built from wood, without chemical treatment, glue or plastic. The designers were inspired by sturdy Alpine houses and Japanese temples, so they used lunar wood, which is harvested according to lunar cycles during the coldest months. This is when the flow of sap in the wood is at a minimum level and the sugar content is lower, ensuring optimum durability and resistance to insects, mould and deformation. Such wood can be successfully processed years later.
The COCOON-Freelancer hut with equipment weighs less than 3.5 tonnes and can therefore be transported by drivers with the most common driving licence category. The small size meant that the facility’s equipment was kept to a minimum. Inside, there is a bed, work surface, storage space, cooker, gas cooker and a water source based on stainless steel materials.
The authors of the construction point to the health benefits. Being in a hut built of untreated wood ensures that there are no harmful toxins in the air. Such walls also allow air to flow through, preventing mould and fogging up the windows. All in all, inside the hut is 185 cm wide and 200 cm high, while its depth is 320 cm. The structure itself weighs 1,200 kg.
