The City of Łódź is continuing its efforts to preserve and protect the valuable historical architectural heritage, which is an important part of the city’s identity. As part of this year’s edition of the Special Revitalisation Zone programme, a decision was made to award grants for the renovation of 15 private townhouses. Thanks to these funds, the buildings will not only receive refreshed facades, but also new windows, renovated staircases and aesthetically pleasing gate passages. This is another step on the way to restoring the town centre to its former glory.
Łódź is famous for its numerous townhouses, which are an important part of the city’s identity. Most of these buildings were erected in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the city was developing dynamically as a centre of the textile industry. The architectural style of Lodz’s townhouses is characterised by diversity, with eclecticism, Art Nouveau and historicism dominating. There are also modernist buildings and buildings erected after the year 2000. The Special Revitalisation Zone programme, run by the Łódź city authorities, has been supporting the renovation of private townhouses in the city centre for years. To date, the budget has allocated more than PLN 24 million for 110 renovations in 77 properties. The programme includes funding for construction, conservation and restoration work, which significantly contributes to improving the aesthetics of Łódź.
The competition to obtain funding is organised every year. Under it, owners and perpetual usufructuaries of real estate, including housing communities, can apply for subsidies covering 30 or 50 per cent of the renovation costs. In 2024, 15 buildings were renovated, and this year the same number of tenements will undergo extensive renovation work. Of the 36 applications submitted, 15 projects were selected for a total of PLN 5 million. Łódź is the fourth largest city in Poland, and at the same time has the largest number of tenement houses in the country – estimates put the number at several thousand. Such a number means both great wealth and responsibility, as well as financial outlay. Their renovation is a major step towards restoring these historical buildings to their former glory and an investment in the quality of life of the inhabitants and the image of the city.
