Łódź invests in culture. Modernisation of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum for PLN 100 million

The Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź is entering a new era. The second phase of the investment, which is worth more than PLN 100 million, has begun. The modernisation of the largest museum complex in Łódź, which will last until 2028, will transform the facility into a modern cultural institution with new exhibition and educational opportunities.

“We are facing a huge investment project worth PLN 102 million. Its implementation will last until the end of 2028. Thanks to this investment, the museum will not only gain a new spatial quality, but also new exhibitions, which I hope will attract both Łódź citizens and tourists,” says Bogumiła Olejnik, deputy director at the Department of Culture in the Office of the Marshal of the Łódź Province.

Preparations are currently underway for the move, which will begin in autumn 2024. Construction work will start in the second quarter of 2025, involving the comprehensive modernisation of the museum’s main building.

The modernisation of the museum is a multi-phase undertaking. In the first stage, completed with an investment of more than 30 million zloty, the outbuildings and courtyard were renovated. They were transformed into study warehouses, conservation studios and educational rooms.

“I am very pleased that we are continuing with the modernisation. What lies ahead of us now is the renovation of the museum’s main buildings. They will gain new functions and, most importantly, the exhibition space will increase, which will allow us to enrich the museum’s offer, ” says Dr Dominik Kacper Płaza, director of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź.

Modernisation will include the two front buildings on the side of Wolności Square. They will be thoroughly renovated from the roof to the cellars. The plan is to replace the window woodwork, renovate the historic doors, and modernise all installations, ceilings and ceilings. An important element will also be the installation of a modern fire protection system. To make the museum more accessible to all visitors, two lifts will be installed and the entire infrastructure will be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, including wheelchair users, the deaf and the visually impaired. Facilities will also be provided for the elderly or those with reduced mobility.

The investment in the modernisation of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum is not only a renovation of the historic infrastructure, but also an opportunity to create new, attractive exhibition spaces. Once the renovation is complete, the layout of the permanent and temporary exhibitions will be changed, and places hitherto inaccessible to visitors will gain new functions.
