“Nitka” is an art installation designed by Izabela Bołoz. The installation is a reminder of the city’s textile tradition and provides a symbolic link between the old post-industrial buildings at 3 Tymienieckiego Street and the modern fabric of the Fuzja development.
The installation can be viewed from 8 November, but a meeting with the artist Izabela Bołoz took place on 22 November, attended by Adam Pustelnik (First Deputy Mayor of Łódź), Michał Piernikowski (director of the Łódź Art. Center foundation, Łódź Design Festival), Waldemar Olbryk (chairman of the board of Archicom S.A., Fuzja complex) and Maciej Trzebeński (director of Art_Inkubator and Art Factory in Łódź).
The installation ‘Nitka’ connected Art_Inkubator and the Fuzja complex. It is located in the passage between the complexes and is open to all. “Thread” symbolically integrates the two spaces, which for a long time functioned separately. The form of the sculpture visualises the idea of stitching the spaces together, alluding to a thread unrolling from a spool. The red ‘thread’ takes on different shapes, penetrates into the ground, only to surface a few metres away.
The project refers to the textile traditions of Łódź and the industrial complex of the town that once belonged to the cotton tycoon Karol Scheibler. The installation is intended to act as an element identifying the place and local identity. The installation has been made in the form of an urban sculpture, its location on a pedestrian route means that walkers will be able to interact with the object and also discover it through their sense of touch.
The design is aesthetically simple, devoid of decorative style or historical imitation, and is not intended to compete with the post-industrial architecture of the area,” reads the Łódź Design Festival website.
The installation was created on the initiative of the Łódź Art Center foundation, as part of the year-long Łódź Design Festival programme, in cooperation with the multifunctional Fuzja complex. Bogusława Bronowicka is the curator of the project.
The project was co-financed from the funds of the Orońsko Polish Sculpture Centre’s own programme entitled ‘Sculpture in Public Space for the Independent – 2024’ from the budget of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
