Luminous cycle path inspired by van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night”

The Van Gogh Path cycle path was constructed using thousands of shimmering stones. Its design was made by Daan Roosegaarde, who was inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s iconic painting Starry Night.

The atypical path was built in 2014 in the painter’s home areas of Nuenen and Eindhoven.

The path was opened in November 2014. Its unusual form combines innovation and design with cultural heritage and tourism promotion. The real attraction of the path is what happens after sunset. After dark, its surface is decorated with numerous points of light. Thousands of stones create a play of light and symbolise the work of the artist.

‘I wanted to create a place that people would experience in a special way, it’s “techno-poetry” for me,’ said Daan Roosegaarde.

The surface of the path is covered with elements that absorb energy during the day to release it at night. In addition, tiny LEDs enhance the effect. In total, the path is 600 m long.

The glowing cycle path is part of the Van Gogh cycle route, which links the painter’s heritage sites in Brabant. The artist created his works in Nuenen, and the water mills of Opwettense and Colse appeared in his paintings. The path opened ten years ago connects these mills.
