Marszałkowska Street in Warsaw with green tracks

This is the next stage of the so-called New Warsaw Centre project. The city announces that Marszałkowska Street will gain a green track. Additional pedestrian crossings will also be created.

A few days ago, we wrote about the effects of the rebuilding of Chmielna Street, which gained more greenery (read HERE). The new Chmielna or the first woonerf in the centre of Warsaw on Bracka Street (read HERE) are elements of the implementation of the New Warsaw Centre plan. In brief, the plan involves removing concrete or asphalt surfaces from the city centre and replacing them with new trees and shrubs. The project also includes the reconstruction of the traffic system, the construction of new cycle paths and pedestrian crossings. The implementation of the entire project is divided into several phases, some of which have already been completed.

Changes will soon take place on Marszałkowska Street, which will gain a green track on a 1 km-long section. The order is divided into two parts, the first covers the section from Widok Street to the southern part of the junction with Królewska Street. The works will bypass the junction with Świętokrzyska Street, which was rebuilt during the construction of the central section of the second metro line.

The reconstruction is expected to make trams travel the route faster. Speed limits will disappear and the passage of vehicles is expected to generate less noise. A green track will be built on the section from Królewska Street to Świętokrzyska Street. The space between the tracks will be covered with sedum. The section towards the Dmowskiego roundabout, on the other hand, will be covered with a crossing. This is a deliberate measure to allow the vehicles of the Provincial Ambulance and Sanitary Transport Station “Meditrans” to use the track space.

The investment is being carried out by Warsaw Trams with the coordination of the City Roads Authority. Officials report that separation strips will be made along the trackbed with space for planting high and low greenery. Curbs will be moved to accommodate the new road layout.

Green track on Puławska Street:

With pedestrians and cyclists in mind, two new crossings are planned at the level of Złota and Sienkiewicza Streets. Changes are also in store for drivers.

In the area of Złota Street, a U-turn will be created, allowing traffic to change direction without having to reach the Dmowskiego roundabout. In turn, a completely new left turn will be created at Sienkiewicza Street, providing access to the quarter in the Złota-Zgoda area,” reads a press release from the Warsaw City Hall.

Bids for the reconstruction of the tracks will be announced in January. The work is expected to start in the summer of 2025. No trams will run between the Metro Ratusz Arsenał and Centrum stops. Trams will run bidirectionally on the remaining sections of Marszałkowska Street and Andersa Street.
