Metamorphosis in Poznań’s Grunwald. There will be more greenery!

The metamorphosis in the Grunwald district of Poznań will include the reconstruction of the roadway, pavements, as well as the revitalisation of roadside greenery. New road surface, orderly parking, planting trees and bushes – these are the changes that will be introduced in the coming weeks on a fragment of Pogodna Street. In addition, the new traffic organisation will cover a quarter of the neighbouring streets. The first works will start on Monday, 9 September.

Pogodna Street stretches from Grochowska Street, through Palacza, Ściegiennego to Raszyńska Street. Its first section, over half a kilometre long, running from Grochowska Street to Palacza Street, is built up with low-rise buildings on one side and adjoins the vast area of the J. Chociszewskiego Family Allotment Garden on the other. It is this part of the street that is going to undergo considerable changes in the coming weeks, which are the result of public consultations carried out in 2022 and the postulates of the Grunwald Południe Housing Estate Council.

Even though Pogodna Street is a local road, it is still used by transit traffic, as drivers choose it in order to travel faster towards Arciszewskiego or Grochowska Street. The surface of the street is dilapidated and vehicles are parked illegally in green areas – under old trees and on already destroyed lawns.

– The metamorphosis of the first section of the street will include the renovation of the dilapidated road surface and a change in the traffic organisation, which will improve safety, reduce transit and make vehicle parking more orderly, explains Piotr Libicki, ZDM’s deputy director for public space. – This will make it possible to restore the greenery along the pavements, including new plantings and protecting the existing tree stock, he adds.

The changes concerning traffic organisation will cover the area bounded by Pogodna – Palacza – Promienista – Grochowska streets. The quarter of streets will be included in the tempo 30 speed limit zone. The intersections will become equal.

Modifications in the directions of travel will affect mainly Pogodna Street, where one-way sections will be introduced to cut through the current transit and calm traffic. Drivers will travel in one direction on the sections: from Belwederska Street to Sowińskiego Street, from Belwederska Street to Tęczowa Street and from Strzecha Street to Tęczowa Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the sections Grochowska – Sowińskiego and Palacza – Strzecha.

Traffic directions will also change on parts of the streets: Sowińskiego (crossing will take place from Pogodna Street towards Promienista Street) and Belwederska (crossing from Promienista Street to Pogodna Street). Thanks to the designation of the contraflow, cyclists will be able to cycle in both directions on one-way streets.
New parking spaces on Pogodna Street will be designated parallel to the carriageway. On the adjacent streets, parking will take place on a general basis.

Metamorphosis in Poznań’s Grunwald – when will the works start?

The first works on Pogodna Street (between Palacza and Grochowska) will begin this coming Monday, 9 September. They will consist of milling the damaged road surface and laying a new one. The works will last three weeks and will involve parking restrictions on the repaired section of the street. The contractor will start removing the surface from the junction with Palacza Street and will move towards Grochowska Street. During the works, the street will be available only to residents – access to properties will be provided. There will be detours along Palacza and Promienista streets.

Once the pavement repairs have been completed, earthworks (next to the pavement) connected with planting will begin. The contractor will pave over 120 square metres of the surface and prepare the area for new greenery.

The painting of the roadway markings and the installation of traffic signs will take place once the earthworks have been completed. The new traffic organisation will take effect as soon as it is in place. Greenery planting will be the final stage of the street’s metamorphosis. According to the project, 23 trees (ball cherries), almost 590 rose bushes and more than 120 pieces of perovia łobodolista will be planted along the pavement. The gardening work is scheduled for autumn.

The cost of all the work is more than £900,000. A large part of this amount has been secured by the South Grunwald Housing Estate Council from the funds at its disposal.
