Warsaw has been given a totally unique place that combines metro travel with culture and literature. As early as 4 September, Metroteka – the capital’s first library located in the space of the underground railway – will open at Kondratowicza station in Targówek. The project is characterised by modern design, technology and nature, and aims to make books as accessible as daily rides on public transport.
Metroteka occupies approximately 150 square metres and has been entirely designed in the style of parametric furniture. The undulating forms and organic shapes create a futuristic interior with space for more than 16,000 books. The range includes new releases, novels, biographies, guidebooks, varsaviana, children’s and young adult literature and a wide selection of reference books. The space of the underground library is divided into an area for adults and a separate area for children. In this way, readers can use the library’s resources in conditions tailored to their needs. Laptops will also be available on site, making it possible to work or study in a specially designed relaxation area.

A new feature at Metroteka is the presence of plants grown in a hydroponic system, i.e. without soil, under artificial lighting. Green arrangements of flowers and herbs give the interior a friendly feel, and the whole is complemented by a self-service coffee machine, which will allow readers to spend time with a cup of coffee or chocolate. Metroteka has been equipped with modern technology. The RFID system and self-checkout devices make it possible to borrow and return books independently, which saves time and makes it easier to access books. There is also an above-ground bookmobile connected to the library at 20 Kondratowicza Street, and more devices operating 24 hours a day in Targówek will soon follow.
The new space is also to serve as a cultural and educational centre. It will host author meetings, exhibitions, workshops and classes for children and adults. The library has been equipped with a multimedia monitor for interactive lessons and presentations. The idea of a library in the metro is not new to the world. Similar solutions are in operation in London, New York, Singapore or Beijing, where passengers can reach for books and e-books during their daily journeys. Warsaw is joining this group and Targówek is becoming a place implementing modern ways of disseminating literature.

Metroteka will open on 4 September 2025 at 10 a.m. The library will be open until 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday. The initiative is the result of cooperation between the Targówek Public Library and the Targówek District Council and Board and the Warsaw Metro Authority. The architectural design was prepared by the GK-Atelier studio headed by Grzegorz Kloda.
