The building is located just outside New York City. The modular house with a flat roof was designed by architects from Palette Architecture. Despite its sizeable area of around 460 square metres, its construction was quick. Prefabricated elements were brought to the plot, which only had to be joined together.
The modular house was built on a green plot with a swimming pool. Its owners use it mainly on their days off when they want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and relax among nature. This is because they own a townhouse flat in Brooklyn.
The investors approached the architects on the assumption that they had a limited budget for the house, but were keen to have it completed quickly. The designers suggested building the house from prefabricated elements, which would achieve lower construction costs and speed up the schedule.
In total, the house consists of two modules, which form the private wings and come together in the living area, where the living room, kitchen and dining room are located. Once the modules were brought to the plot, the elements were put together in just one day. The next step was to finish the building, laying the floors and the façade. Thanks to modifications at the design stage of the modular elements, it was possible to provide more glazing and raise the height of the rooms.
In the end, the building was created in an ‘L’ shape. From the front, the designers chose to distinguish the façade with wooden panels; from the garden, the façade is white. The interior was designed to attract views of the landscaped courtyard. Large windows occupy two walls of the living space, facing the rear. The bedrooms and bathrooms also look out onto the courtyard, which forms the backdrop to these rooms. The construction cost a total of US$1 million, which is hardly a large sum in the United States.
