Natural raw materials and calm colours. This is how the yoga studio was created

A former office on rua de Pedrouços in Lisbon has been given a completely new function following a refurbishment by studio Atelier Réalité. The premises have been reorganised so that they can be used for bodywork and tranquillity as a yoga studio and a venue for culinary workshops. The interior has been designed in such a way that it can be converted into flats at a later date. Natural materials and muted colours create the perfect atmosphere for relaxation.

All windows in the premises face only one side of the building – a tree-lined street. For this reason, the design focused on maximising the use of daylight. The main room has been opened up to the world, which strengthens the visual contact with the street. The kitchen was placed in a section that provides more privacy and allows people to work away from the traffic.

In the middle of the design, a compact block was placed to accommodate ancillary functions. Storage, a shower and a toilet are concentrated in one space, so that the rest of the flat remains tidy and free from any interference with its clarity. This has made it possible to conceal previously visible structural elements, while at the same time establishing a clear division of zones. Movable glazing in striking black frames and curtains make it possible to adapt the character of the interior to the specifics of the activities currently taking place.

From the outset, the design allowed for the possibility of using the space differently in subsequent years. The layout of the premises is conducive to potential adaptation into flats or other functions, according to the needs of the current tenants. In this way, the architects at Atelier Réalité have skilfully increased the flexibility of the building.

The interiors of the premises are dominated by natural raw materials in light and calm tones. Oak surfaces, marble with a distinctive texture, linen and mineral paints bring softness to the space and provide the opportunity to focus, so important for yoga and other activities for the body and soul. The carefully designed lighting and choice of furnishings reinforce the tranquil character of the interior and ensure comfort while working. The yoga studio has been tailored perfectly for the comfort of its users – including the culinary ones.
