New Balance 1300JP – inspired by the Japanese love of detail

Introduced in 1985, the New Balance 1300JP model quickly gained recognition as one of the most comfortable running shoes of its era. Over time, it also gained cult status in the fashion world and among sneaker collectors.

Japan played a special role in the birth of this phenomenon. It was there, in the 1990s, that the 1300JP gained exceptional popularity – both among enthusiasts of American street fashion and aesthetes who appreciate craftsmanship. The growing interest prompted New Balance to release a special reissue of the model in 1995. Since then, new versions have appeared regularly – every five years – each time generating great interest.

“When I think about why the 1300JP are so popular in Japan, I think about how much attention to detail we pay. For Americans, Made in USA products were simply part of everyday life. The Japanese, on the other hand, paid attention to subtle sewing details and irregularities. It was in these details that they found beauty – and they are what made the 1300JP so highly regarded in Japan.” – explains Takayuki Ohashi, founder of the legendary shop The Apartment in Tokyo’s Kichijōji district.

Production of the 1300JP is handmade in the United States using the highest quality nubuck, mesh and ENCAP components. The precision craftsmanship, minimalist form and muted colour scheme perfectly match Japanese aesthetic tastes and expectations of quality and authenticity.

“The Japanese deeply analyse every thing. Trends are not limited to what is popular at the time. We pay a lot of attention to the cultural context of products.” – adds Hirofumi Kurino, co-founder and long-standing creative director of United Arrows, member of the LVMH Prize jury and considered one of the most influential figures in the fashion world.

The 1300JP is the definition of a timeless product, whose immense strength lies not only in its design and quality, but also in its cultural significance. It has been absorbed by culture – particularly Japanese culture – as more than just footwear. It is a symbol of style, awareness and respect for detail.

In Poland, the 1300JP will be available for sale from 29 May 2025 exclusively at PRM’s stationary shop in Warsaw’s Norblin Factory and at prm.com
