The first stage of work to turn Chmielna Street in Warsaw into a green route has been completed. The section in the immediate vicinity of the Atlantic cinema and Pasaż Wiecha was completed first. The RS Architektura Krajobrazu studio is responsible for developing the spatial development concept in the Chmielna Street area.
We recently wrote about the opening of the first woonerf in Warsaw. Bracka Street was transformed into a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly place (read HERE). Now, another section has been given over, which has gained new greenery and elements of small architecture. The reconstruction of Chmielna Street is underway, and the effects of the work are being handed over in stages. The general contractors for the reconstruction are the consortium of Balzola Polska Sp. z o.o. (consortium leader) and PHU BRUKSTAR Michał Kabziński.
The square was dedicated on 1 August to allow Nigerian diplomats to visit the statue of August Agbola Brown alias ‘Ali’ . He was a jazz musician who performed in Warsaw entertainment venues. In the Warsaw Uprising, he fought in the Iwo Battalion in the South Downtown.
The works on Chmielna Street are organised in such a way as to ensure that residents can move safely from Wiecha Passage to Nowy Świat. The section they can already use was opened on the first of August. New tall trees and perennial shrubs have been planted here. The missing greenery will be replanted according to the original schedule.
This is how the place looked in 2021:
All in all, the scope of work on Chmielna Street includes road works along with permanent traffic organisation. Installation works, such as roadway drainage, construction of water supply connections, construction of a sanitary sewer connection, relocation of the gas installation, construction of an installation for watering the greenery together with a lighting installation on poles, overhangs and in the ground. The final stage of the works is landscaping and gardening. The latter is what residents are most looking forward to.
In order to minimise the impact of the construction work on the shops, cafés and restaurants operating in the area, the contractor decided to carry out the work in such a way as to allow the street to pass through, while at the same time providing access to all the premises.
And this is how it looks today:
The dismantling of the pavement, the laying of the new pavement and the implementation of the installation works are therefore happening point-by-point in different parts of the street, at different rates and to different scopes, reports Balzola in a press release.
When will the works be completed? We will be able to walk along the new Chmielna Street this autumn.
