New life for an old barn. The 1869 building is home to a ceramics studio

The restored barn from 1869, situated in a picturesque old orchard of 1 hectare, is teeming with new life. The building, located in Grodziec, in the Lower Silesian Voivodship, underwent extensive renovation to adapt it to modern needs. Thanks to carefully planned works, it was possible to preserve the historical character of the building while transforming it into a functional venue, ideal for workshops and meetings. The old barn now serves artists who create unique ceramics.

To stabilise the barn’s structure, the building was externally dug in and then backfilled with stone to further strengthen and insulate the foundations. This treatment also added to its rustic charm. The interior has been carefully thought out and modernised. An underfloor heating system was installed on the ground and upper floors, ensuring comfort even in the colder months. The concrete floor of the upper storey is supported by solid masonry columns, which guarantee the stability of the entire structure of the vintage building.

The wooden beams supporting the ceiling of the top floor come from the demolition of an old, post-German factory. Thanks to this procedure, it was possible to preserve the authentic, historical character of the interior, combining the past with modern solutions. The interior walls of the building have been clad with lightweight Suporex blocks, which significantly improves the thermal insulation. Large windows and six roof windows located in the dormers provide the interiors with plenty of natural light. In addition, a bathroom and a toilet have been built on the top floor, making the building fully functional. There are now four toilets in the building, allowing more people to comfortably use the space when attending workshops and meetings here.

Next to the restored barn is a larger building that is also awaiting renovation. It features a stable with beautiful sandstone vaulted ceilings, which will become another special place in the complex after renovation. It is planned to connect the two buildings with a special connector, which will enable free movement between them and even better use of the entire space. The entire investment fits perfectly into the character of the place, where history meets modernity. A renewed plaque with the year “AD 1869”, mounted on the wall of the barn, reminds us of the rich history of the building, which, thanks to the efforts of the owners, has gained a second life.

The restored outbuilding is home to Millena Ceramics, a venue that offers the opportunity to participate in inspiring ceramic workshops. These workshops offer a unique opportunity to learn the basics of ceramics, including glazing and firing, as well as creating your own unique piece. All necessary raw materials, tools and expert tuition are offered. Workshop participants can take advantage of the possibility to rent a flat located in the same building.
