The former Hannacha Pump Factory is one of the most famous factories in Leszno. The historic buildings had been falling into disrepair for decades until they were finally saved thanks to a project by Informal Architects. The work took several years and included both the historic buildings and the new parts of the complex. The result was the creation of flats, retail and catering units, as well as a new residential development with underground parking.
The pump factory was founded in 1868 by the Jewish entrepreneur Phillipp Hannach. At the time, it was regarded as one of the most modern plants in the Prussian partition and a symbol of the city’s dynamic development. In 1923, engineer Wincent Kraupe became its owner and continued the production and expansion of the company. After World War II, the plant’s operations gradually ceased and the extensive factory site in the very centre of Leszno fell into disrepair.
The breakthrough came with the start of design work by Informal Architects. The revitalisation concept restored the prestige of the complex and transformed it into a space adapted to the modern needs of the city. The development included luxury flats, restaurants and services, and tidy green areas were opened up to residents. Modern additions, such as an apartment building at the rear of the site and an underground car park, have also become an integral part of the premise.

Of particular importance to the investor was the renovation of the front building on Narutowicza Street, which is the most representative part of the entire complex. The restored façade emphasised the urban character of the area, and the interiors of the historic building were adapted for residential and service functions. The works also included the reconstruction of architectural details, woodwork and historical colours, as well as equipping the building with modern installations.
The restoration of the historic buildings also included the neighbouring villa and the post-factory red-brick halls. The whole project is a good example of an approach in which heritage conservation has been combined with the adaptation of buildings to fulfil new functions. As a result, the former Phillipp Hannach Pump Factory has been given a second life and can once again be the pride of Leszno residents.
