New life within old walls: the interior of a house in the heart of Gdansk

In a historic part of Gdańsk, within the walls of an old red-brick house, the studio GRUPA MALAGA under the direction of Marta Kodrzycka and Marta Wróbel combined historical charm with modern functionality. The owners wanted to preserve family furniture and memorabilia, giving them new life in a space full of warmth and cosiness. The interior design expresses respect for values and tradition, while responding to the needs of contemporary lifestyles.

Open ground floor interior

From the threshold, the intense colour of the front door invites you in, repeating itself on the exposed steel pull-up and in the designer light fixture, while the deep built-ins at the entrance combine a wardrobe function with comfortable seating and capacious storage space. In the kitchen, integrated white goods and cargo baskets hidden behind high fronts contrast with a light workflow with no upper cabinets, where smooth panels in broken white and light wood provide a subtle backdrop to a dark family table and vintage accessories. A bench running along the wall not only connects the two parts of the kitchen, but also conceals additional storage, highlighting the clever use of space.

The owners of this space dreamed of creating a space that exuded warmth, cosiness and functionality, while highlighting the unique character of the old building. They wanted their old family furniture and memorabilia to find their place in the interior, ” explain the architects.

The living room combines a modern sofa with restored armchairs upholstered in fresh fabrics, while a soft carpet defines a comfortable lounge area where tradition meets current design. The most magical spot is the conservatory: the brick slope of the floor, lush vegetation all year round, wicker armchairs, bookcases full of books and an art déco sideboard create a green retreat that, thanks to two passageways in the outer wall, seamlessly connects to the living room and the small garden outside.

Private area

On the first floor, the space has been divided into four rooms, each with the comfort of the occupants in mind – the children’s room exudes lightness and encourages playfulness, the master bedroom is an oasis of calm, and the small study has been arranged to encourage work and reflection. In the bathroom, daily rituals are given a unique setting thanks to an old cabinet under the countertop washbasin, a standing copper faucet, pastel mint-coloured door woodwork and a small vintage window letting in subtle light. The mirror accentuates the interior with a stylish wall lamp, and the soft colour palette harmoniously combines modern minimalism with the cosy atmosphere of the old house.
