New meeting place. Revitalisation of the market square in Chelmsko Slaskie begins

The revitalisation of the market square in Chełmsko Śląskie, the heart of the town, is underway. The project aims to improve the aesthetics, increase functionality and adapt the space to the needs of local residents and growing tourist traffic. All works will be carried out with respect for the historical character of the place and under the close supervision of the conservator.

As part of the investment, it is planned to tidy up the existing tree row and introduce new planting in the central part of the square. On either side of the statue of St John of Nepomuk two chestnut trees will appear, referring to the former stand of trees. The new greenery composition is intended to emphasise the architectural qualities of the surroundings and give the space a fresh, orderly appearance. There are also plans to replace the paving with materials made of local, natural stone. The space will feature unified small architecture including benches, flower pots, information boards and waste bins. The pedestal and square around the statue of St John of Nepomuk will also be renovated to restore their former aesthetics.

This is not the end of the changes. In addition, the square will be equipped with modern LED lanterns, which will also serve as carriers of the town’s video surveillance system. This will increase safety in the centre of the village, while improving the quality of lighting after dark. The central part of the square will be adapted for the organisation of open-air events such as the Silesian Weavers’ Fair. The design solutions will make it possible to organise events without having to close the district road. There are also plans to build a fountain in the form of a shallow basin, located in the viewing axis leading to the church. A stage and a gathering place will be created to enable concerts, meetings and other cultural events to be organised.

The revitalisation of the market square in Chelmsko Slaskie also includes the reconstruction of the bus stop in the direction of Uniemysl, which will provide greater convenience for passengers. Parking spaces will be tidied up and bicycle racks will be installed. The entire space will be adapted to the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities by removing architectural barriers. The revitalisation will be carried out by the Municipality of Lubawka in the years 2025-2026 with the support of EU funds from the FEDS 2021-2027 programme. The total cost of the investment is more than PLN 2.3 million, 70 per cent of which is a subsidy from the European Union. Completion and acceptance of the works is scheduled for the end of 2026.

The aim of the project is to create a safe, aesthetically pleasing and friendly public space, which will become the centre of social life for residents and an attractive place for tourists. After revitalisation, the market square in Chelmsko Slaskie is to function as a place for meetings, leisure and events, becoming one of the most important points on the map of the region.
