New trees in Wrocław’s town square. Project preparation underway

Wrocław Market Square, the heart of the city and one of the most important historical spaces in Poland, is in for a greenery refresh. A plan is being prepared for planting new trees near the Town Hall and the Aleksander Fredro monument. However, this process requires detailed coordination with the Lower Silesian Provincial Conservator of Monuments, which is a key stage of the project. Only after consultations and agreements on the species of trees and their location have been finalised, will it be possible to proceed with the project. The new trees in the Wrocław market square will completely transform this green space, which is poor in greenery.

Greenery in a historic space

A plan is currently being developed to replace the depleted tree stock with new specimens. The historic nature of the Market Square means that all activities in this space must comply with conservation guidelines, which means additional consultations and precise planning of each stage of the works.

Problems of urban greenery

During the summer, it was noticed that many of the trees in the Market Square were in poor condition – they were losing their leaves quickly, indicating that they were weakening. The historic buildings in this part of the city make conditions for trees extremely difficult. The limited space for root systems and the peculiarities of the urban microclimate pose a serious challenge for greenery.

Methods for saving trees

The Urban Greenery Management Board (ZZM) regularly monitors the condition of trees in the city, including in the Market Square. A number of measures have been carried out to save the existing vegetation, including loosening the soil with earthworms. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the condition of some of the trees has not improved, forcing the authorities to decide to replace them with new ones.

“We want there to be as much greenery in the Market Square as possible! We are already preparing a plan for new plantings, which also takes into account a significant improvement in the habitat conditions that are so difficult here,” – says Marek Szempliński of the Wrocław Urban Greenery Board.

New trees in Wrocław’s town square

The new trees in Wrocław’s Market Square will not only decorate this historic space, but will also improve the comfort of residents and tourists by providing shade and improving air quality. The planting project under preparation aims to create sustainable and aesthetically pleasing urban greenery that will meet the demands of both the historic space and the challenging environmental conditions.
