The first meeting of One Desk architects with Inga and Florian, a Polish-French couple planning to move into a new flat on Śliczna Street in Krakow, was far from a typical conversation about interior design. It was Mila, a several-month-old sponge-coloured golden retriever, who stole everyone’s attention. The client’s needs had to wait for a while, and only after time did it become clear how much the dog had influenced the final project. The metamorphosis of the flat breathed a new spirit into it.
Natural colour palette in the interior
When viewing the finished interior after several months, it became clear that Mila had largely decided on the colour scheme of the rooms. The colour base of the interior is based on the warm, honey-coloured tones of the oak parquet flooring, which is complemented by a lamella made of oak half-slats in the living and entrance area. Warm wood in various shades appears almost everywhere – in the kitchen overhead units or in the bathroom decoration. Additional colour accents have been used judiciously. Greens can also be spotted in the interior, such as the olive green kitchen fittings and the Guatemalan marble in one of the bathrooms.
Metamorphosis of a flat – thoughtful changes to the layout
The functionality of the flat has been significantly transformed. The kitchen, which was originally an extension of the living area, was moved to a niche adjacent to the dining room and living room. Thanks to this solution, the dominance of the kitchen over the living room was avoided, achieving harmony in the relaxation zone. The space freed up was allocated to the night zone, where a private bathroom, laundry room and dressing room were created. In addition, a small but capacious larder was created.
Night zone and lighting challenges
The needs of remote working meant that the spacious bedroom was divided into two smaller rooms, with a spacious dressing room taking over the storage function. In the entrance area, away from the windows, the lack of daylight was a challenge. The solution became steel and glass walls in the study, allowing natural light into the hall. A similar structure appeared between the bedroom and the dressing room.
Sophisticated details and materials
In the living room, a custom-made corner sofa in a warm grey colour takes centre stage. A faux leather armchair and a beige and white chequered carpet from Jotex complete the living area. The dining area is distinguished by an oak table for eight from Hoom and a custom-made steel and glass display cabinet. On the walls hang sconces from the Spanish company Aromas and graphics by Michal Sroka.
Modern interior finishes
The kitchen features a grey olive coloured built-in with a TechniStone Noble Arco conglomerate worktop and island. The island on the living side is clad in Raw Decor sticks, while Casalgrande Padana Pietre di Paragone Gre Bianco tiles appeared on the floor. The guest bathroom is dominated by Raw Decor sticks and 41zero42 Solo Grey tiles on the walls and floor. The green marble washbasin commode is from Pastform. The private bathroom uses Vives Portofino-R Humo tiles on the floor and Ragno look bianco glossy on the walls. The washbasin on the marble countertop is also by Pastform.
Metamorphosis of a flat inspired by nature
The project for a flat on Śliczna Street in Kraków shows how a thoughtful change to the functional layout and inspiration from nature can create a warm, harmonious interior. It is also a perfect example of how even the smallest family member can influence the final shape of a home.
