The JONATAN kindergarten in Bielsko-Biała is a realisation in which architecture becomes an extension of the landscape and a pedagogical tool. The design by Aneta Szpoton-Dziąćko of the 53Studio studio combines respect for the building’s past with sensitivity to the needs of children and the environment. The building not only houses care and educational functions, but becomes a daily laboratory of contact with nature and architecture for the youngest.
The location on Laskowa Street, adjacent to a mountain stream and a forest, was not treated as decoration, but as the foundation of the design concept. The landscape determined the direction of the form, the layout of the windows and the living areas. The view of the greenery and the audibility of the water permeate the interiors through the material scales, the rhythm of the window openings and the orientation of the rooms. Nature acts as a teacher here, shaping the daily rhythm of the day and encouraging observation, play and exploration.
Materials close to nature
The adaptation and restoration of a historic building became the starting point for a dialogue between history and contemporary ecological solutions. The interiors are dominated by wood combined with exposed brick and mineral plasters. Eco-friendly breathable paints and natural finishes create an atmosphere of cosiness and have an educational value. Textures, scents and the warmth of natural materials become elements of children’s sensory developmental path and a conscious tool for shaping relationships with the environment.
The colour palette inside is based on greens, beiges and warm wood tones. These colours have a soothing effect and promote concentration and creativity. The colours have been used in a varied way: more saturated in the play and exploration areas, subdued in the rest and speech work areas. The integration of colours with natural light and external views reinforces the sense of cohesion between the interior and the landscape.
Sustainable architecture
The JONATAN kindergarten is part of the trend towards sustainable architecture by minimising environmental impact and actively drawing on nature. The design combines the preservation of historical elements with ecological solutions and materials with a low carbon footprint. The architecture responds to the social demand for a greater presence of nature in public and educational spaces. In this way, the building not only conserves resources, but also shapes the habits and ecological sensitivity of future generations.
This trend responds to the growing social demand for a greater presence of nature in our homes, offices or public buildings. In my designs for both private and commercial clients or public buildings, I very often incorporate solutions taken from nature. The kindergarten project was exceptional in this respect,’ says Aneta Szpoton-Dziąćko, founder of the 53Studio studio.

Interior and functionality
The interiors of the kindergarten have been designed with flexibility of use and the comfort of the children in mind. The layout of the classrooms, corridors and common areas respect the natural routes of communication and views of the greenery. Furniture and built-ins have been adapted to the children’s scale, and finishing materials facilitate maintenance while maintaining aesthetics. The educational space leads from more controlled zones to open ones that encourage independence and group exploration.
The JONATAN kindergarten is a project in which form serves an educational function. The architecture and interior design encourage observation, respect for materials and the relationship between the environment and man. Aneta Szpoton-Dziąćko’s realisation shows that the renovation of the historical fabric can at the same time be a field for modern, sustainable and educational architecture.
