Old Prague according to the Saneccy studio. Her work received an honourable mention

The City of Warsaw has decided on a competition to develop a concept for the redevelopment of streets, squares and green areas in the central part of Old Praga. The new development of this part of Warsaw’s right bank will be designed by the RS Architektura Krajobrazu studio. An honourable mention was given to the work prepared by the Saneccy studio from Krakow.

The awarded vision of the ‘Secret Garden’

The authors of the awarded work proposed transforming this part of Praga into a space resembling a “Secret Garden”. The designed urban layout is intended to stimulate the senses and offer a space for regeneration. The project places great emphasis on building a mood with varied greenery and carefully selected paving. The Saneccy studio was inspired by three local cultural hotspots: Praha Cinema, the Baj Theatre and the Praga Backyard Band Monument. Their presence prompted the authors to create a premise based on the story of Old Praga, in which the urban space becomes a kind of scenography.

Two squares, one story

The project encompasses two main urban interiors: the existing 1863 Weteranów Square, transformed into Weteranów Park, and a newly designed urban square called the Secret Garden. The two spaces are connected by Floriańska Street, the composition of which has also been adapted to the new concept. The plan provides for the arrangement of communication and greenery and takes into account the needs of users of different ages. The character of each space is emphasised by functional and compositional differences: the Weteranow Park is dedicated to the elderly, while the Secret Garden is intended to attract families with children and young people.

Revitalisation with a view to the past

One of the main objectives of the project is to restore the spatial identity of Old Praga by using local materials and forms characteristic of the pre-war buildings here. Great importance has been given to stone paving, which is to be preserved and supplemented according to historical patterns. The new paving will harmonise in colour and material with the existing infrastructure. The symbolic sphere also plays an important role in the project. Spatial installations that allude to theatrical and film motifs are envisaged. Residents are to become participants in an urban performance by passing through ‘mirror gates’ inspired by wardrobe doors. A summer stage will be created near the Backyard Band statue, which can be used for cultural events, seasonal trade or simply as a meeting place.

Greenery, retention and friendly spaces

The project involves extensive pavement clearing and the introduction of new planting to counteract urban heat islands. A key element is rain gardens and linear retention beds that will support natural water management. A variety of vegetation is envisaged, both tall and low, as well as shade-loving compositions that are resistant to drought and devastation. A variety of rest areas, playgrounds, a puddle-inspired fountain and comfortable routes for pedestrians and cyclists are planned for users. The streets will be given the character of pedestrian/pedestrian thoroughfares with a speed limit of 30 km/h. Parking will be tidied up and complemented with greenery.

Thoughtful infrastructure and accessibility

Existing technical infrastructure has been taken into account in the design, in an effort to minimise collisions and costly reconstructions. Small architecture will be made of durable, natural materials, including granite, exotic wood and stainless steel. Benches and seating have been planned with accessibility and comfort in mind for users of all ages and abilities. The proposed changes are intended to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the space, but also to contribute to a lasting improvement in the living conditions of the residents. The revitalisation of Old Praga is intended to be comprehensive and to address the space and the social and environmental needs of this part of the city.
