It is now one year since the completion of one of the largest investments carried out in Poznań since 2000. The comprehensive redevelopment, known as the Centrum Project, covered several downtown streets, but it was 27 Grudnia Street that underwent the biggest revolution. Previously characterised by a lack of order and aesthetics, being dominated by asphalt and concrete. The reconstruction completed in June 2024 has dramatically changed this negative image. Although the investment was carried out in stages, it has a few stumbling blocks, but the final result is decidedly positive.
The idea for the entire project was born in 2015. It was then that a competition was announced for a concept to redevelop the deteriorated and visually unattractive city centre of Poznań. The participants’ task was to develop a plan for St Martin’s, 27 Grudnia Street and the routes connecting the two thoroughfares. The main prize was won by Studio ADS from Poznań, which proposed a comprehensive traffic calming and the introduction of a coherent spatial aesthetic. The project included a significant widening of pedestrian zones and an increase in the share of greenery. The greatest restrictions on car traffic were introduced in the area of Wolności Square and 27 Grudnia Street.
Although the manner in which the investment was implemented was not free of controversy and delays, the effect is impressive and deserves recognition. 27 Grudnia Street received a coherent appearance, and the changes have had a positive impact on the perception of this space and the quality of life of its residents. The image revolution has even resulted in several townhouses recently undergoing renovation, which has further emphasised the positive tone of the redevelopment. As part of this, non-functional pavements were widened, new benches, litter bins and lighting were added, and concrete and asphalt gave way to flower beds and tree rows. The street has also received a new track surface, as well as pavements and cycle paths. These were made of stone paving blocks and granite slabs, blending in perfectly with each other and with the surroundings. The effect was worth waiting for, as it is impressive and makes Poznań boast an aesthetically pleasing city centre.
