A new residential development called Yanlord Arcadia has emerged in Shanghai. The centrepiece of the development is a nine-metre-high recessed courtyard with a sculptural and very light form. The Lacy Steps Garden was designed by TROP: terrains & open space, developing the idea of a ‘garden within a garden’. The openwork structure creates a vast, multi-level landscape in which public space merges with nature and the daily lives of the complex’s residents.
A garden among gardens
The concept of the entire Yanlord Arcadia complex and its greenery is based on the idea of gradually opening up the landscape. The main garden has been divided into four smaller spaces, which differ in mood and vegetation, while maintaining the coherence of the entire composition. In this way, a sequence of places of different character has been created, favouring discovery and moments of relaxation. At the heart of the development, the most striking garden, named Lacy Steps Garden, was designed as an entrance space. It is a transition zone between the lobby, the residential buildings and the residents’ club.

Lacy Steps Garden as the heart of the composition
A nine-metre-long, sunken courtyard forms the centrepiece of the design. The space naturally leads users through three levels, which are connected by a system of wide stairs and terraces. These are arranged in a spiral rhythm, and the shape of the steps, the soft curves and the changing proportions of the balustrades create a sense of tranquillity and look particularly elegant. The staircase connecting the different floors not only facilitates communication, but also becomes part of a very sculptural design. This filters light, allows air and rain to flow freely to the plants, and at the same time protects the privacy of the users. As a result, the interior of the courtyard remains bright, airy and filled with greenery, while the open geometry and thoughtful view axes encourage exploration, creating a sense of fluidity and movement.
The form of the Lacy Steps Garden in Shanghai
The balustrades and stairs are made of metal and concrete with a smooth finish. The lines of the handrails have been refined to provide ergonomics and a sense of continuity. Steps transition into seats and the edges of the terraces become a natural place to stop. Greenery has been incorporated into the gaps between the flights of stairs. The materials used in the design, such as steel, stone and wood, are juxtaposed in a way that emphasises the differences in texture and chiaroscuro. The whole is reminiscent of a natural amphitheatre, where vegetation, light and stairs form a common setting.
The courtyard also has a social function. The central platform is used by people looking for a quiet place to read, as well as by residents organising small events or meetings.
