Polish expression is a phenomenon that is difficult to define unequivocally. It manifests itself in impulsive reactions, comments and ways of responding to the world, but also in a conscious choice of form. In the 29th issue of whiteMAD magazine, we take a look at fashion, architecture and design creators whose work has been influenced by this very characteristic element. What makes their work an expression of the local, the personal and the bold?
In the ‘Fashion’ section, we present projects that explore the theme of Polishness in diverse ways. Gabriel Data, in his collection POLISHER: Notes on Poland, addresses the theme of the homeland and offers his own interpretation of the concept. Aleksandra Dłutowska, in her collection Made in Poland, combines salvaged clothing elements with new forms, constructing a narrative that, whilst drawing on the past, remains rooted in contemporary realities.

In the ‘Architecture’ section, we find Polish interiors that also speak to our national emotions and characteristics, an example of which is,among others, the flat in Mokotów designed by Studio Monocco. We also take a look inside a flat in Bydgoszcz by the Duży Pokój studio and the Napar café in Toruń, designed by the Znamy się studio. And these are just some of the projects we feature.
In the “Design” section, we focus on objects that particularly reflect the sensibilities of their creators. A set of objects by Piega Studio delights with its subtle form and choice of materials. Alongside these, the eye is drawn to a collection of furniture and functional objects by Maria Gil. The whole is rounded off by a curated selection of accessories by Aleksandra Hyz, who has highlighted the top examples of Polish design.
We would like to thank Anna Zakrzewska for creating the artwork featured on the magazine’s front pages, and Westwing for supporting this issue.
