Polish projects awarded in the European Property Awards

On Thursday 17 October, the European Property Awards were presented in London. This is an international competition that recognises the best projects in both architecture, interior design and design. We are publishing some of the projects and developments from Poland that have won the highest praise from members of the international jury.

The European Property Awards recognise projects that stand out for, among other things, quality, innovation, functionality and those with environmentally-friendly solutions. Prizes are awarded in several categories, and the winners of each will be able to compete for victory in the global edition of the event – the International Property Awards. Which projects were recognised in London? Here they are.

Lublin Metropolitan Railway Station, designed by Tremend

The Tremend architectural studio can talk about great success, having won as many as three awards in this year’s competition. One of them was for the design of the Metropolitan Railway Station in Lublin. The project won in the Public Service Architecture category. The new station integrates various modes of transport in one place – long-distance and local bus transport, trolleybus transport, rail transport, bicycle traffic and taxi service. This is a significant convenience and an attractive solution for passengers to transfer and travel further.

The building has a simple and light form. The most distinctive decorative elements are the openwork pillars, which are part of the station’s steel structure and the platform canopies. The modern volume contrasts with the historic 19th-century bus station, but the contrast is visually very attractive.

Our project is a symbol of the transformation of the city and an expression of concern for our common future. Our proposed solution is based on a balance between various key elements: functionality for users, an impulse for the revitalisation of this part of the city, and the application of technology in line with sustainable development on many different levels,’ explains architect Magdalena Federowicz-Boule, lead designer of Lublin Bus Station and president of the Tremend studio.

Remedium investment flats in Gdańsk, design MS 15

Domesta, which invited architects from the MS 15 studio to design the Remedium investment flats in Gdańsk, can also speak of success. The competition jury appreciated the quality of the intimate building and decided to award prizes in two categories: Apartment/Condominium Development and Architecture Multiple Residence.

Remedium is a four-storey building with 65 flats and three retail and service units. The area of the former varies and ranges from 36 to 63 square metres. The building’s strength is the use of high-quality finishing materials. The fluting in the façade refers to the historical buildings of the district, and the brick used has taken on a decorative character.

When designing the Remedium building, we focused on making use of the site’s assets – the character of a quiet, historic residential district and its central location on the city map. We were able to create an elegant building finished with high quality materials that refer to the details of the surrounding tenement houses, as well as an intimate, green recreational space in the rear part of the plot. We hope that the investment will harmoniously fit into the landscape of the district, and for the owners and residents it will turn out to be an aesthetic and functional space in one of the most unique corners of Gdańsk,” says Martyna Lech of the MS 15 architectural studio.

Scheibler’s farm in Łódź, designed by Design Lab Group

In turn, the award for the design of the Scheibler Folwark in Łódź was won by Vision Development. The Folwark project was prepared by architects from the Design Lab Group studio. Their concept is to transform old buildings located by the Nad Jasieniem park into a modern place to live. Mostly residential space will be created here, but retail and service units are also planned.

The concept is to build 242 flats. Each will have access to a parking space in an underground garage. The building, which will be four to seven storeys high, has been designed to create an inner courtyard that is intended to be vibrant. The architects proposed a regular arrangement of windows and balconies and keeping the façade in natural ceramic. In this way, the new part will blend harmoniously with the neighbouring historic buildings.

The architects were also responsible for the design of the renovation of the listed buildings: the former stables, barn and granary. The renovated ones are to become attractive places to live. There are also plans to build a road that will connect the Scheibler’s Folwark with Śmigłego-Rydza Avenue.

Residence (of) levitating houses, designed by Exterio in collaboration with interior architecture studio Hola Design

The European Property Awards have awarded a project for a single-family house near Warsaw. Residence (of) levitating houses is a project by the Exterio studio, realised in cooperation with the Hola Design studio. When designing the house, the architects wanted to match the original form to the forest surroundings, while maintaining the intimate scale of the development. In order to achieve this effect, they proposed a building form in which each member of the household would have his or her own ‘cottage’. The result is a composition of rhythmically repeating volumes in the form of modern barns. The building won the award in the Residential Interior Private Residence category.

In the design concept, we proposed to create an architecture that would refer to the modernists’ slogan ‘form follows function’. The modern villa was intended to integrate a large family and, on the other hand, to meet the expectations of all household members who wish to have their own secluded enclave with a view of the forest,” says architect Marcin Klukowski of the Exterio studio.

The designed interior is an extension of the aesthetics of the body of the building. The materials and colours used relate to the façade. In the rooms, one can find aged brick, black steel and corten-coloured elements. To make the space visually warmer, the architects used oak wood elements in the form of French fir on the floor.

The interior style is a sophisticated combination of modernity with a light loft form and a hint of glamour. Subtle greys, warm shades of wood and brown, harmoniously intertwine with the rawness of concrete and strong black lines. In turn, decorative elements in yellow, gold and blue add life and clarity to the interior, ” say Monika Bronikowska and Adam Bronikowski, co-owners of the Hola Design studio.

Hotel Meininger Krakow, designed by Tremend

London also liked the design of the Meininger Hotel Krakow. The interior of the hotel was designed by architects from the Tremend studio. Their realisation received an award in the Hotel Interior category (the studio received two awards in this category, as the interior of the Parisian Alberte Hotel of their design was also honoured).

When designing the interior of the hotel in Krakow, the architects were guided by the slogan ‘Flow of Creation’. The slogan is meant to reflect the spirit of adventure and encourage active discovery of the city, learning about its history and feeling energised.

Inside the hotel, many references to the history of Poland’s former capital can be found. These include posters, signs as well as stylised furniture. The walls of the common areas and rooms are decorated with collages relating to Krakow’s artistic and scientific heritage.

Flat Foksal 13/15 in Warsaw, designed by Hola Design

Foksal Residential Interior Apartment is the winner in the Residential Interior Apartment category. This is another realisation by the Hola Design studio. The interiors of the flat in the 19th century tenement house Foksal 13/15, is a journey into history, where the beauty of the belle époque intertwines with a modern lifestyle. The tenement in which the flat is located is situated on the Royal Route in Warsaw.

The flat, awarded in the European Property Awards, is located on the top floor. In the interior design, every detail was important. The investor focused on high quality furnishings. White marble, hand-forged balustrades with wooden handrails, richly decorated door portals and stuccowork allow for a kind of time travel.

The luxury flat is a space that exudes classical elegance from the threshold. – We were inspired by the context created by the building’s architecture and past. We wanted to refer to historical elements but retain a certain lightness. Therefore, we combined stucco with a more modern interior finish. The wooden floors and doors, referring to those of the original 19th century, introduce a timeless aesthetic, ” say project authors Monika and Adam Bronikowski of Hola Design studio.
