Porto

Porto: a 19th-century mansion has been given new life. At its heart is a fancy staircase

In the heart of the city of Porto, amid picturesque streets and historic buildings, there is a unique residence built in the mid-19th century. Originally serving as the home of a nobleman from the Douro region, its fame and reputation grew over time, mainly thanks to its finely decorated woodwork and the perfect composition of its façade. However, the most eye-catching feature, invariably for many years, is the extraordinary staircase, located in the central part of the building, which leads to the top floors, all topped by an impressive skylight.

Over the years, the building has served a variety of functions, from a luxurious hotel that hosted the most illustrious people to the headquarters of the resistance against the Estado Novo regime. It was also home to the Porto Film Club and a driving school. This versatility was one of the greatest assets of the building, which seemed to be prepared for every possible function.

Faced with the dominance of tourist functions in the area, the project team undertook the ambitious task of transforming this historic building and giving it new life. The concept was to create a residential building with retail and service spaces on the ground floor. The project aimed to respect and highlight the historic versatility of the building, preserving the layout and character of the common areas, as well as renovating decorative elements that have stood the test of time.

The designers focused on maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the building. The works included the restoration of the decorative stonework on the façade, the balcony balustrades and the internal and external window and door frames. The layout of the ceilings and the centrally located staircase were also preserved. The newly introduced elements, although modern, have been designed in a way that emphasises the textures and colours of the materials used.

The main aim of the project was to create a sustainable and coherent whole that is functionally integrated but flexible and adaptable. The new design aims not only to extend the usefulness of the building, but also to ensure that the investment in its restoration will bring long-term benefits. The transformation of this historic residence is not only a tribute to its rich history, but also a preparation for the next century and a half of use and possible future functions.
