Postmodernism in Wrocław is out of luck. Wrocław University of Technology has announced plans to rebuild the C-11 building. This is the so-called ‘Tower of the Magi’, where the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, and later the Faculty of Mathematics, had their headquarters. The published visualisations show that the building will lose its characteristic ornamentation in the new arrangement.
This is yet another post-modern building in Wrocław that will disappear from the landscape. Although its walls will remain, all elements characteristic of postmodernism will be lost. The building is located at 14a Janiszewskiego Street. For many years, it housed the Faculty of Mathematics, which has recently moved to a new site – the renovated hospital on Hoene-Wrońskiego Street.
The university authorities have announced a plan for a major redevelopment of the building, which will be enlarged. New storeys will be added – four on the north side and one on the south side, which will serve as an entrance area.
Thescope of the works will include structural, construction and finishing works, as well as installation works, including sanitary installations and equipment, heat supply, mechanical ventilation, fire, air conditioning, electrical and teletechnical installations, informs Wrocław University of Technology.
“The Tower of the Magi will change its appearance. Totally. The characteristic glazing on the front, which tapers stepwise towards the top, will be removed. The semi-circular balcony will also be removed. The entrance area will also lose its pointed end and the staircase will disappear.
Reconstruction is due to start in autumn 2024 and be completed in 2026. After reconstruction, the building will be used by the Faculty of Fundamental Technological Research.
