Plac Powstańców Warszawy

Powstańców Warszawy Square as a green enclave. Work has already begun

Powstańców Warszawy Square is undergoing a metamorphosis that will change its current character. Thanks to the completed construction of a modern underground car park and ambitious plans for greening the area, the centre of the capital will not only become more functional, but also more friendly to residents and visitors.

on 21 March, a four-storey underground car park located directly under the square was opened. The modern infrastructure offers 420 parking spaces, and the investment itself was realised in the concession model – a private investor, the IMMO Park Warszawa Sp. z o.o. company, financed it in its entirety, allocating approximately PLN 85 million for this purpose. For the next 35 years, the car park will be managed by the concessionaire, after which it will come under the control of the city. The completion of the underground works is only the beginning of the changes on the square. In the coming months, the space above the car park will get a completely new face. It is planned to create a square full of greenery with alleys, a pergola and resting places, which will become an important element of the New Warsaw Centre project. The green space will be divided into three thematic sections: The Music Garden, the Napoleon Garden and the Square Under the Pergolas.

As part of the new arrangement of the square, as many as 58 trees will be planted. Silver lime trees of the Warsaw ‘Varsaviensis’ variety will dominate, accompanied by plane trees and Tartarian maples. In addition, there will be around 800 shrubs and rich beds of perennials. The pergola, which will stand on the side of Swietokrzyska Street, will be entwined with climbing plants, providing natural shade and cooling on hot days. With the ecology and maintenance of the vegetation in mind, two water points have also been made to allow watering in case of drought. Bike racks will be provided for cyclists, and the planned layout of alleys and recreational spaces will be conducive to both daily walks and social gatherings.

Powstańców Warszawy Square has the potential to become one of the most attractive points in the New Centre of Warsaw. Not only because of its functionality, but above all because of the growing need to create green enclaves in the City Centre. Work to develop the area above the car park has already begun and is scheduled for completion in 2026.
