A new green space has been created in the heart of the Ogrody estate in Poznań, which is already becoming a popular place for relaxation and strolls. The square, located within the vicinity of the tram terminus, is the result of a joint initiative by the Ogrody Housing Estate Council and the Poznań City Transport Authority. The newly created space offers residents alleyways among trees, bushes and flowerbeds, as well as comfortable benches to relax on. Importantly, access to the tram stops has also been modernised, making access to public transport much easier.
Before the project became a reality, until a year ago the area around the tram terminus was an undeveloped space used by residents mainly to shorten their journey to the terminus. Today, thanks to the project, it has been transformed into a friendly, green square. As part of the work, 24 new trees were planted, including Dutch lime trees, red chestnut trees, common maples and American ambrosia. The vegetation also included a variety of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses such as catnip, orchids and roses to decorate the space all year round.
The chairwoman of the Ogrody Estate Council, Zofia Martyńska, emphasises that the creation of the square is a response to the needs of residents, who were looking to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the place. The project was created after much consultation with the local community and cooperation with ZTM, as well as with the support of the city and private sponsors. As a result, a space was created that not only improves living comfort, but also provides a safe and aesthetically pleasing meeting place. What’s more, lighting and CCTV have been added to the square, ensuring the safety of visitors. The upgrade has also taken into account the needs of people with disabilities and the space has become more accessible. Chairwoman Martanska points out that this is not the end of the action, however – the Estate Council is planning further changes, including the erection of a statue of Dr Wanda Blenska, a well-known resident of the Gardens, as a form of commemoration of her services.
The new square provides both a place to relax and a new centre for the social life of the estate. There is a good chance that it will become one of the most important points on the map of the Gardens, offering both relaxation and facilitating daily communication.
