The pupils of the General Education School Complex No. 33 in Poznań can speak of a revolution. For many years, the courtyard between the buildings was a large asphalted island. Work has just been completed to remove the asphalt surface and replace it with plants. The green square in this form has clearly transformed the place.
The completion of the works was announced by the Poznań City Hall. The metamorphosis covered the courtyard of the General Education School Complex no. 33 in Wyspiańskiego Street in Łazarz.
The de-paving of the courtyard at the school in Lazarus is another measure to help the city’s climate. In addition, in such a place, it also has an educational value, says Jacek Jaskowiak, Mayor of Poznań.
Importantly, similar changes will be carried out on the squares at five other schools. In these places, concrete surfaces will be replaced by biologically active surfaces. Green paving has a positive effect on retention, helps eliminate the effects of sudden downpours and eliminates the phenomenon of “heat island” in summer.
At the Poznan school, more than 2,000 square metres of asphalt were removed. In addition, six trees and 2,000 shrubs and perennials were planted. A sensory garden was also built, with a colourful surface made of various materials and plant boxes. The sensory paths consist of eight circular fields. Their interiors were filled with other materials: bark, tree chips, pebbles, granite grit, brick, sand and black concrete. New lighting, landscaping elements and a small retention system were also installed. The courtyard, thus arranged, can be used by pupils during breaks.

The school buildings were constructed over a hundred years ago. The school was the first in Poznan to be built in the so-called pavilion system. The buildings were located on the periphery of a quarter of the street and a large courtyard was arranged in the centre. In 1929, on the occasion of the General National Exhibition, the Pavilion of Building Ceramics designed by Stanisław Mieczkowski was built next door. Today the building houses a gymnasium.
