Poznań has its new footbridge. Berdychov bridges open

At the end of February, a new crossing for pedestrians and cyclists was officially opened in Poznań. These are two Berdychov bridges over the Warta River and the Ulga Canal. In total, the crossing is almost 300 m long.

The design documentation for the bridges was prepared by a consortium consisting of: ARPA Architektoniczna Pracownia Jerzy Gurawskiego, Błażej Szurkowski (SKI Studio), Maciej Sokolnicki (MS86A) and Adam Turczyn. The entire crossing has a modern and light form and consists of two parts. The designers decided to install glass balustrades with handrails that do not interfere with the view of the river. Inside, the handrails conceal the lighting installation. The selection of the luminaires was carried out by the contractor in collaboration with the Department of Metrology, Electronics and Lighting Technology of Poznan University of Technology under the supervision of the Municipal Roads Authority staff. In addition, there were standard lamps around the entire structure.

The longer part of the crossing is located over the Warta River and is 165 metres long. The shorter section over the Ulga Canal is 117 metres long. As part of the construction of the bridges, new accesses, stairs and ramps were also created. The bridges will be complemented by greenery, which will appear in their surroundings in the coming weeks.

I have no doubt that these bridges will be an icon of Poznań visited by locals and tourists alike. They will connect the Old Market Square, the showpiece of our city, with the recreational areas by the Malta River. In addition to their obvious communicative significance, this is also an investment which will bring residents even closer to the Warta River. For over the last few years, we have seen how much the banks of the river attract leisure people,” says Jacek Jaskowiak, Mayor of Poznań.

In the near future, clean-up work will still be carried out on the technical roads along which material deliveries were made. In connection with this, the contractor will renovate the slipway at the St Roch Bridge, which served as access to the construction site.

The bridges were officially opened on Friday 28 February at 6pm.
