Poznań: hydrants dressed in red and white mugs

For the umpteenth time, hydrants in Poznań have been given white and red cups. This is Aquanet’s way of remembering the anniversary of the Wielkopolska Uprising.

The Wielkopolska Uprising broke out on 27 December 1918. Its participants demanded the return of the lands remaining under Prussian rule to Poland. The impulse for the outbreak of the uprising was a visit by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who had been welcomed by the inhabitants the day before during his trip to Warsaw. Paderewski gave his famous speech in front of the Bazar Hotel. Subsequently, the insurgents took control of the Poznan Province in a short period of time.

These events are recalled by symbols such as the white and red mugs. The unusual ornaments were knitted by senior women from the Day Care Centre “Klub Słoneczna Przystań”.

Year after year, we grab the yarns with great pleasure. We hope that these symbolic ornaments please the eyes of the residents of our city. And there can never be too many reminders of the victorious uprising, even in a slightly humorous form, ” believes Kornelia Redelbach, head of the centre.

In total, the senior women made 25 mugs, which decorated hydrants throughout the city.

The more insurgent accents in the public space, the better. The independence uprising launched on 27 December 1918 is a source of pride for all of us. Patriotic clothing for hydrants is our small, yet well-received contribution to the joyful celebration of the 106th anniversary of the Wielkopolska Uprising. And all under the slogan “Pin the bow” – emphasises Przemysław Ciupka, spokesman for Aquanet.

The campaign was organised for the eleventh time.
