Poznan Nightingales. Poznan’s iconic neon sign shines again

Its first version lit up over Poznan already in 1974. The neon sign Poznan Nightingales returned to the roof of the Poznan Philharmonic building. Its repair cost PLN 40 000.

The neon sign Poznan Nightingales was designed by Antoni Rzyski. Today, it is one of the most recognisable neon signs in Poznań. The colourful decoration consists of a stave with a violin key and small nightingales. The latter twinkle according to a specific sequence. The cycle lasts less than a minute. Interestingly, one of the nightingales is yellow and lights up all the time. It symbolises the conductor and founder of the choir, Stefan Stuligrosz. The other nightingales are blue, green, yellow and purple. In total, the structure is 150 cm high.

The neon sign is located on the building at 81 Święty Marcin St. The ornament has been repaired before. The last such major renovation was carried out in 2007 and it shone for two years without any major problems. The neon was then switched off for financial reasons. There was a lack of funds for its maintenance.

This year, the neon “celebrates” its 50th birthday. Its repair was carried out by Piotr Heinze’s company, who is the co-author of many Poznan neon signs.

The neon was repaired thanks to a city grant. A programme has been running in Poznań since 2023, which offers financial support to institutions to install neon signs. The ‘Neon Poznań’ competition aims to once again illuminate the city with colourful decorations, just like in the 1970s. In the first stage of the competition, applications for financial support could be submitted by entrepreneurs and institutions operating within the area of Święty Marcin – Gwarna – 27 Grudnia – Plac Wolności – Al. Marcinkowskiego. The next edition of the competition has already covered the entire city.
