Pre-war school building in Gdansk’s Brzeźno regains its former glory

The historic school building in Gdańsk’s Brzeźno district has regained its former glory. A thorough renovation was carried out by Gdańsk Real Estate under the Integrated Territorial Investments programme. Thanks to these works, this important monument to the city’s history is as beautiful as it was years ago, and above all it once again serves the people of Gdańsk.

The building at 32 Gdańska Street was one of the first Polish common (primary) schools in the Free City of Gdańsk, established under the Treaty of Versailles. It was opened more than a century ago, and in 1934 54 Polish children attended. The school has become a symbol of Polish education in Gdańsk, and now, after restoration, will be the seat of the St. Brother Albert’s Aid Society.

Due to the historical nature of the building, all work was carried out in accordance with the conservation work programme. The renovation included a wide range of activities that ensured the building was both modern and retained its historical value. The first stage of the renovation was insulation work to protect against damp and improve the thermal insulation of the building. The next step was structural work to strengthen the building’s structure, ensuring its stability for many years to come.

As part of the refurbishment, all installations – electrical, plumbing, heating and fire protection – were also replaced. The final element of the renovation was the finishing work, which restored the interiors to their former charm. The historical character of the building was preserved, while giving the rooms a modern look that meets contemporary standards.

The building has also been equipped with an advanced building management system (BMS – Building Management System), which allows the remote reading of individual utilities, control of the operating parameters of the equipment and notification of any problems and failures. The renovation also took into account the needs of people with disabilities. The building has been adapted so that it is accessible to everyone, regardless of their mobility. In addition, the area around the building was landscaped to make it more comfortable.

The comprehensive renovation began in August 2023 and was completed in July 2024. The total cost of the investment was more than PLN 4 million, of which EU funding accounted for more than PLN 700,000. Thanks to this investment, the former school building at 32 Gdańska Street has not only retained its historical value, but has also gained modern facilities that will allow it to be used efficiently and comfortably for many years to come. This is a further step towards the protection and restoration of the precious monuments of Gdańsk.
