Hidden in the heart of an old Krakow tenement is an unusual two-storey flat, where the classic character of antiques meets a postmodern vibe. This bold juxtaposition, which may seem risky at first glance, nevertheless surprises with its harmonious and thoughtful effect. This project was created by Anna Jędrysko and Aleksandra Radej of Lunarne.Studio, who successfully combined tradition and modernity here. Prussian blue, antiques and contemporary elements give the flat a unique expression.
The focal point of the arrangement became the Madonna, looking down from the large tondo in the living room, and the massive carved sideboard. These elements were the starting point for the entire project, influencing the choice of colours, styles and forms. References to these classic elements can be found in almost every corner of the flat. Their presence is subtly marked in various places – from the graphics above the bed, to the geometric patterns on the walls, to the colours of the bookcase in the study and the kitchen furniture. Even the fine mosaic flooring in the kitchen and vestibule, despite its contemporary pattern, refers to the style of Krakow’s townhouses, emphasising the investors’ respect for their roots and family traditions.
Heavy antiques and noble navy blue were complemented by surprising postmodern touches. These contrasting elements, such as the pink and salmon accents, the geometric paintings on the walls, the memphis-style leg in the kitchen peninsula and the painted stucco in the bathroom, add character and dynamism to the space. The leafy motifs on the wallpaper also bring freshness and naturalness to the interior.
One of the most important elements of the flat is the staircase, which has been an important point in the living room space from the beginning. After rethinking their form and function, the staircase has not only gained a new aesthetic look, but also practicality. The oak steps wind around a decorative bookcase, while creating storage space in the lowest parts of the structure. Additional details such as the rounded edges of the furniture, the stone worktop in the kitchen and the soft headrest in the bedroom emphasise the intimate and cosy character of the interior, enriched with warm walnut tones and the striking strong colour Prussian blue.
There are two bathrooms in the flat, each a separate stylistic story. The small guest bathroom is reminiscent of a postcard from a holiday in the tropics, with intense colours and exotic motifs. In contrast, the bathroom accessible only to the household is a subtle, cool composition, reminiscent of a swim in the refreshing waters of the North Sea. Both bathrooms, although contrasting in style, fit perfectly into the overall interior concept.
The flat project realised by Lunarne.Studio is a perfect example of how classic and modern can be harmoniously combined. By skilfully juxtaposing antiques with postmodern accents, the creators have created a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional, full of life and personal character. The flat reflects a respect for tradition while opening up to modern trends and fresh solutions.
