Rack or strut garden pool – which to choose?

Having your own garden pool is great fun and entertainment. However, in order to make the right choice, you need to consider which option will be best – a frame pool or a strut pool? What are the differences and which will be a better choice for your garden? Let’s find out!

What’s the difference between a rack and strut pool?

A garden pool is a practical and stylish addition that can enhance your front garden space. More often than not, the purchase decision is based on a choice between two types of pool – rack and strut pools

A frame pool rests on a rigid frame – a solid frame usually made of metal. This supports the pool shell, which is usually made from durable PVC. This structure provides stability and makes the pool adapt in shape to the frame – it can be round or rectangular or square. This type of garden pool is quite sturdy and works well even with larger sizes.

A strut pool (also known as an inflatable or pneumatic pool) does not have a rigid frame. Its construction is based on an inflatable ring at the top of the basin. When the pool is filled with water, the pressure exerted on the walls causes them to expand, which keeps the entire pool upright. It therefore grows as it is filled with water. The more water, the higher the walls of the pool. This means that it can be adjusted to suit the current needs and the people who use it.

Advantages and disadvantages of a frame pool

A frame pool, just like an extendable pool, has its advantages and disadvantages. The former include:

  • greater durability – the metal frame provides solid support and additional protection for the basin itself. The material used to create the pool is quite resistant to damage, so it is also an ideal choice for families with children;
  • availability in larger sizes – frame pools can be much larger than strut pools, often reaching a diameter of 5-6 metres. They are also available in rectangular and oval shapes. The largest models can even replace in-ground garden pools – allowing free swimming;
  • greater stability – the rigid construction makes the pool less susceptible to deformation caused by wind, uneven ground or simply – everyday use;
  • better support for accessories – frame frames are better able to withstand the strain of fitting additional equipment such as filter pumps or ladders.

As far as disadvantages go, the following are definitely worth considering when choosing a frame pool:

  • higher price – frame construction is more expensive than strutted construction, both for purchase and repairs;
  • longer and more complicated assembly – assembling the frame requires more time and often the help of a second person;
  • heavierweight and more difficult to store – metal frame components are heavy and take up a lot of space in the off-season;
  • risk of corrosion – metal components can rust over time, despite corrosion protection.

Advantages and disadvantages of a strut pool

In some cases, an expander pool may be a better choice. The advantages of such a solution include:

  • lower price – strut pools are much cheaper than frame pools, so you can afford them even on a tight budget;
  • easy and quick installation – simply inflate the top ring and fill the pool with water. The whole process should not take more than half an hour;
  • convenient storage – once the water has drained and dried, the pool can be folded away – it won’t take up much space;
  • lightweight construction – the absence of metal components makes strutting pools lighter and easier to transport.

Disadvantages of a strut pool include:

  • less durability – strut pools are more prone to punctures and damage. They typically have a lifespan of 2-3 seasons;
  • limited size – strut pools rarely exceed 4 metres in diameter and are mainly round in shape;
  • less stability – the inflatable flange can lose air, leading to the walls collapsing.

Which pool will work better in your garden?

The choice depends on a number of factors. A frame pool may be a better choice if you plan to use it for many seasons. In addition, it is the only right choice if you want to swim (other than an in-ground pool). Garden pools of this type are available in larger sizes, so will be suitable for large families or for summer parties with friends. However, this option, especially if you want to use the pool for swimming, requires more space in the garden and extra space for storing the structure when folded. A slightly larger budget is also required.

An extendable pool is a more economical option for smaller gardens. It’s a great option for people who want it to be as quick and easy to assemble as possible.

In addition, it’s worth taking into account the specifics of the site. Rack pools are better able to cope with slight unevenness, while extendable pools require a perfectly flat surface.

What to look out for before buying a swimming pool?

Regardless of the type of garden pool, it is worth considering the expected size and depth before purchasing. If it is to be an attraction mainly for children, then a smaller expander model will be sufficient. However, if it is also to be used by adults for swimming, then it should be at least 6 metres long and at least 1.2 metres deep.

It is also worth paying attention to the accessories included. Some garden pools are sold with a filter pump or pool mat. In addition, it is important to pay attention to the manufacturer itself. Reputable companies not only mean a better quality product, but often a longer guarantee.
