Along the Central Railway Line, solutions will be put in place to reduce the negative impact of railways on the environment. Acoustic solutions to warn animals of approaching trains will appear alongside special amphibian crossings.
The investment will cost PLN 180 million and is financed by the NIP. Its aim is to protect animals from direct contact with trains. The aim is to raise the permissible speed of trains to 250 km/h, which will be appreciated by passengers travelling between Krakow and Katowice and Warsaw.
The directions of the changes on the CMK line were announced by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection. The works will cover the section from Grodzisk Mazowiecki through Opoczno, Włoszczowa Północ to Zawiercie. Special shelves with a total length of over 4,000 metres will be installed on 78 culverts. Such shelves will allow amphibians and smaller animals to cross the line without coming into contact with the trackbed.
In addition, audible devices will be installed along the Central Railway Line to warn larger animals of oncoming trains. In total, such devices will be set up in 42 locations and will emit different sequences of sounds, such as the warning voice of a jay or the barking of a dog.
The railwaymen also plan to build new noise barriers. A total of 3.4 km will be set up.
The task “Design and construction of elements of technical infrastructure along railway line No. 4” is planned to be carried out as part of the project “Adaptation of the CMK to a speed of 250 km/h”. The value of the contract signed with the contractor Nowak-Mosty Sp. z o.o. is PLN 181 million net. The investment will be realised with funds from the National Capital Operational Programme. The investment is planned to be completed in August 2026.
