Renovation with respect for the past. New life for a historic building in Porto

A magnificent townhouse located in the heart of Porto’s historic centre, it is a testament to the local architecture of the late 19th century. Consisting of five floors, the building serves a residential function on the upper floors and a commercial function on the lower floors. Situated on Rua de Mouzinho da Silveira, a street characterised by compact, urban development, the building is an integral part of this space, fitting in with the architectural continuity of the area. Its renovation not only contributes to the coherence and aesthetics of the surroundings, but also emphasises the importance of the building in the urban context.

The renovation of the building was carried out with care to preserve elements of architectural value in order to emphasise its unique character. Although the interiors of the building have been completely modified, the key elements that constituted its historic character have been preserved. In cases where the technical condition prevented renovation, new elements were created along the lines of the original ones, using the same materials and designs.

A contemporary architectural language was used in the interior design, which contrasts sharply with the historical elements. Modern solutions such as spatial divisions, fixed furniture, finishes and sanitary facilities have been introduced in a way that harmonises with the original style of the building while emphasising its historical identity.

The choice of finishing materials in the private and communal spaces has been carefully considered. Materials have been used that form a solid base, allowing future residents to personalise the interiors according to their own needs. Common spaces such as corridors are dominated by wood and exposed concrete, whose raw texture and neutral colours give these spaces an impersonal yet distinctive look.

The intervention as a whole contributes to a harmonious blend of the past and the present, creating a space that not only reflects the historical heritage but also responds to the contemporary needs of its users. Thanks to the comprehensive refurbishment, the townhouse standing next to the Infante Dom Henrique garden is now one of the most beautiful elements of its setting.
