Residents made it themselves. Rose mosaic in Bytom

The mosaic refers to the former name of the street – Rose Avenue. Made of ceramic elements, the rose mosaic decorated the wall of a building on Zaułek Street. It is small, but reminds us of the history of the place. The creation of the mosaic was preceded by a workshop for residents. A total of 25 people made the work.

The mosaic was created on the initiative of the association MDM Miasto dla Mieszkańców, and the funds for its realisation came, among other things, from a grant by the city of Bytom. Participants in the workshop were able to learn about the technique of creating the mosaic and find out more about its importance in public spaces. Substantive support was provided by Anna Maniak, Agata Ochman and Jan Wichrowski from the group Galgany. A total of eight workshop meetings were held.

The artwork was created as part of the project ‘Mozaikowa brama przy ul Zaułek’ (Mosaic gate on Zaułek Street), which aims to recall the history of the Rozbark district through a mosaic of Rozbark roses. The gate connecting the outbuilding of the tenement with Zaułek Street was decorated in a colourful way.

Różana was a street whose smell, to put it mildly, had little to do with roses. It was called that a little out of spite, a little jokingly. Everything in Bytom is changing for the better. It would be worthwhile for this street to be truly associated with roses, too, ” explains Magdalena Tomal-Wichrowska of the Stalowe Anioły design studio.

The wall decoration was made using a classic technique. It involves peeling ceramic tiles and placing them on a grid. This technique is quite expensive, but has a positive effect on the durability of the entire work.
