In fast-growing Seoul, where progressive urbanisation often creates a barrier between residents and nature, a unique project is emerging that has the potential to change the way we view urban living. Hannamdong-4 Residences, designed by the renowned UNStudio in collaboration with Samsung C&T Corporation, is an innovative approach to residential architecture, combining innovative design, biophilic inspiration and sustainability.
“Hannamdong-4 Residences is an extremely exciting project as it sets a new standard for urban living in Seoul. By combining biophilic design, sustainability and innovation, we are creating a unique residential experience that harmonises the energy of the city with the serenity of nature. This project is not just about architecture – it is about shaping a future where people, community and environment coexist in harmony,” said Ben van Berkel, founderand chief architect of UNStudio.
Architecture inspired by nature
The Hannamdong-4 Residences development includes ‘O’ shaped towers facing the Han River, and ‘X’ and ‘L’ shaped towers located along the Bogwang-ro leading towards Namsan Mountain. The spiral structures of the towers are a patented UNStudio solution, combining modern design with landscape harmony. The ‘Biophilic Nexus’ concept on which the project is based focuses on health, sustainability and community integration. Architectural inspiration is drawn from local heritage and natural elements of Seoul’s landscape, such as white pine and water lilies.
Local inspiration at Hannamdong-4 Residences
UNStudio’s design, especially the facades of the towers, refer to the unique natural elements found in South Korea. The ‘X’ towers are inspired by the structure of white pine trees, with elements referencing their trunks and branches, while the ‘O’ towers incorporate modules reminiscent of water lilies, which symbolise the dynamism and elegance of the Han River. The ‘L’ towers provide a visual backdrop to the other buildings, combining elements of pines and water lilies.
Modern technology in construction
Hannamdong-4 Residences offers flexible interior layouts that can be adapted to the changing needs of residents. Technological solutions, such as solar panels and energy management systems, support sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint.

The project includes the creation of numerous community spaces, including a panoramic community centre and an ecological promenade, ‘Highline 365’. This elevated 365-metre-long structure will become a place of activity and recreation for residents and local communities. Samsung C&T Corporation also plans to create five parks with a total area of 33,000 sq m, which will significantly enhance the urban landscape and improve the quality of life for Seoul residents.

Green terraces, water management systems and the use of renewable energy sources are key elements of the project. Hannamdong-4 Residences promotes a green approach, minimising environmental impact and supporting biodiversity. With advanced solutions and a unique approach to architecture, UNStudio’s project sets a new standard for urban living, harmonising the dynamics of the city with the beauty of nature.
