Sartoria Ristorante e Pizzeria w Łodzi

Sartoria in Łódź. New restaurant in the former Karol Scheibler power station

Sartoria Ristorante e Pizzeria is the latest restaurant by Karol Szafraniec and Bartosz Serdakowski-Goldstein. After the well-received Popolare restaurant in Warsaw (which you can read about HERE), the investors decided to invite Sojka & Wojciechowski architects again to design a restaurant in Łódź in the unique Fuzja development at Tymienieckiego 5/7.

For some time now, the former Karol Scheibler power station has been brought back to life through an Echo Investment investment, designed by Medusa Group architects. The former industrial buildings are being painstakingly restored and a new housing estate is being built around them. One of the historic buildings has found a place for the Sartoria restaurant. The restaurant is located on two floors and has over 350 metres of floor space.

In a similar way to ‘s earlier project, the architects decided to create a place that, with its design, would refer to the serene nature of Italy, breaking down the austere post-industrial character of the building. In the design itself, there is a direct reference to the name of the place – Sartoria or tailoring. The ground floor of the restaurant is surrounded by a red neon sign, which on one side is wound around a fork like Italian pasta and at the other end of the premises is threaded onto a tailor’s spool. This thread/noodle motif also runs through the staircase and upstairs in the form of paintings and laser-cut sheet metal installations. It was the lightweight sheet metal elements, superimposed on the original cleaned brick and attached to its joints, that allowed the creators of the space to deal with the main problem, which was the absolute prohibition on interfering with the original walls of the building.

All of the newly created walls in the building have been clad with small coloured tiles according to a pattern designed by the architects. This pattern also appears on the central table as a linking element between all the spaces in the premises. These colours have also been ‘sampled’ and are repeated in the interior on furnishings (tables, sofas, upholstery, etc.) to create a coherent whole.

In addition to the striking thread motif, the interior of the restaurant contains a number of tailoring-related touches, such as the decorative lamps on the tables designed in the shape of a spool, or the lamps in the shape of hangers on the first floor, made together with the artist Vlad Oganov.

Once again, the premises, designed with precision in every detail, have made it possible to create a place with Italian cuisine like never before in Łódź.

About the studio:
Sojka & Wojciechowski – we founded our studio in 2004, while we were still students at the Faculty of Interior Design of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. We started by designing small functional forms and interior designs for magazines. To date, together we have designed more than 100 interiors – private and public: from a 30-square-metre studio to a 600-square-metre sports club in the centre of Warsaw.

Despite the passage of time, we like to call ourselves a young design studio. Over and over again, we draw inspiration from the city we live in by traversing it on a scooter, skateboard or motorbike. We successfully reconcile the latest trends with classic, avant-garde, industrial forms, always approaching each project with a fresh perspective.
