Sudeten Cottages in Międzygórze. The project refers to the traditional development

A complex of four small holiday homes was built in Międzygórze, near the border of the Śnieżnik Landscape Park. The Sudeten Cottages were designed by architects from the Tekktura studio. The houses have simple shapes, and their form refers to the traditional buildings of the region.

This is a picturesque place in Lower Silesia. Międzygórze and its surroundings are known for their tourist attractions and picturesque location. Historic Norwegian and Tyrolean-style architecture from the 19th century has been preserved here, and tourists visit the region to explore the area during mountain hikes. Excursions are possible, among others, thanks to hiking and cycling trails from the massif of Śnieżnik and Czarna Góra.

The Sudeten Cottages were designed in accordance with the Local Area Plan. The architects knew that referring to classic building forms would provide the best comfort for guests. When looking for the ideal shape, they consulted architecture textbooks describing historical buildings and proportions. The book by E. Trocka-Leszczyńska Wiejska zabudowa mieszkaniowa w regionie sudeckim (Wydawnictwo Politechniki Wrocławskiej, Wrocław 1996), from which the proportions of the ground floor to the gable were taken, proved useful here.

A total of four identical buildings were constructed here, which are situated on the slope in a single diagonal line. The buildings appear to ‘climb’ up the slope. The architects proposed a form that emphasises the buttress detail of the traditional orchid rafter framing of the Sudetenland cottage. The building is covered by a pitched, gabled roof with the main slopes inclined at 50 degrees. Importantly, an additional rafter beam was planned, the so-called buttress, with a 37-degree pitch and symmetrically extended eaves – these give the side walls their characteristic shape.

The houses were built using natural materials. Here, too, the architects analysed literature describing regional Sudetic architecture and conducted a site visit, during which they became familiar with the buildings of the Międzygórze settlement complex. As a result, they designed natural façade finishes in the form of vertical boarding forms made of oiled larch.
