This is a good example of how nature is treated in public spaces. A tree in Szczecin interfered with a plan to build a new pavement. Instead of being cut down, the chestnut tree, which was several metres tall, was moved to a new location.
The action to move the tree was announced by Szczecin City Investments. The horse-chestnut tree was in the location where the road works were carried out. The tree was interfering with the pavement designed on Ostoi-Zagórskiego Street. The chestnut tree was inspected and assessed to be in very good condition, the age itself estimated to be 15-20 years old. The SIM inspectors decided to replant the tree.
The relocation of the tree was preceded by maintenance pruning to reduce the crown. The aim was to preserve as much root volume as possible so that the tree could be established in its new location. The chestnut tree ended up in the central part of the new roundabout. The hole in which the tree was planted was treated with ingredients to help it take hold.
Hydrogel, mycorrhizal inoculations and autumn fertilisers were administered. The chestnut tree will receive specialist care in the first period after replanting, says Piotr Zieliński, spokesman for the City of Szczecin for investments.
The construction works include the reconstruction of Kredowa Street, Urlopowa Street, Ostoja Zagórskiego Street, the construction of a new road section constituting an extension of Czesław Miłosz Street, the construction of an intersection with circular traffic, the construction of pavements and parking spaces, the reconstruction and construction of public and individual exits, the construction and reconstruction of the rainwater and sanitary sewage system, the construction of street lighting, the reconstruction of clashing underground networks (m.the project will also include the construction of a new road section and the reconstruction of public and individual exits, the construction and reconstruction of the rainwater and sanitary sewage network, the construction of street lighting, the reconstruction of clashing underground networks (e.g. power, gas, water and teletechnical networks), the demolition of cubature facilities, and greenery management.
The modernisation of the road system of the North district in Szczecin includes the reconstruction of eight streets with a total length of almost 4.9 km.
Earlier this year, we reported on another interesting project in Szczecin. During works on Bożena Street, a ramp pavement was built. By suspending the pavement above the ground, the root system of a nearby tree was not damaged. You can read more about it HERE.
